Planer Boards

I saw most guys on the weekend using a very small version of a planer board (looks like a small float with a flag on top) that looks very easy to use. I was wondering if anyone could tell me where to get these and give me a brief overview of how they work? I have the larger ones and they can be a real nuisance to use. Thanks for your help!

Hey Superdad, just out of curiosity, are these what you use? These particular ones? Or did you find something locally. I'd like to get some myself so I'm wondering if they're readily available. Thanks for any info....WIG

I have two myself, they're the Offshore Inline Planer Boards, small plastic ones, with a red flag. I bought mine at Gagnon's in Oshawa, but better call ahead, they might be sold out. They come in right and left, makes sense. They're quite easy to rig, once you read the instructions. I'm going to try crafting some sort of reeling device on each side of the boat and try using the one release instead of two. Then it's just the line and the fish. Anyone else ever do this?

When we use the in-line planer boards we replace the first clip with the red ones (OR-16 Snap Weight Line Clip) from off shore. The reason is they have a pin in the clip which means the board won't come off the line when a fish hits. The back clip remains the off shore black clip (OR-14 Adjustable Medium Tension clip) and this clip releases when a fish hits.

The main problem when rigged in this manner is you have to fight the fish with the board on the line.

If you use the boards as is when bought, they come with 2 black clips (OR-14 Adjustable Medium Tension) which could both release when a fish hits. This means the board is left floating in the water after a hit.

Weedman has a neat idea (reeling device with line attached to the board) that would allow the board to release when a fish hits but still be able to retrieve the board without have to drive over and pick it up. This works very much like the planer board mast/dual planer board system except that when using the mast and dual boards you use the black clip on the planer board line which slide towards the board after a fish hits. You only need to bring the dual boards in when you are having a good day (i.e. no clips left).

I've been mainly lurkin', but here is a question:

What if you dedicated a rod to the side planer (board), and used another rod for the line with the lure?

Would the MNR classify that as one rod (per angler), or 2?

I agree that it would look suspicious, but would it be legal?

It may be an easy solution, in lieu of a dedicated reel system for the board.

I saw a couple of boats east of the ferry fishing 4 rods for 2 guys - at what point, if any, is this legal at Quinte? Someone told me that once you pass the ferry toward the lake, two rods are legal. I wasn't sure so didn't take the chance.

East of the ferry is considered Lake Ontario where 2 rods per person is legal.

Wasn't quite the question ('though east of the ferry is considered Lk Ont, therefore two rods/angler allowed).

Question was... if one rod is attached to board only (no hooks) and the other rod is attached to a lure via the board release, is that considered one rod or two??

I have extra rod holder space, but not the means of mounting a dedicated (permanent) reel system for boards.

I just picked a pair up at Lebarons. Right and left cost me $90.00.

Strange, I didn't even flinch on purchaseing these planner boards but still considering on replaceing windows on house......

Just wondering if you can get those flags to pop up when ya get a bite like a tip up when ice fishing?

RangerGuy, trust me, you will know it when one of those big fall walleye hit. The board will start to move back towards the back of the boat and your rod will be bent in half. A reel with a clicker works well for this application.
