I know there was a fairly spirited discussion a year or two ago about the pros and cons of gulp vs. minnows and I was wondering what the general consensus was a couple years on.

For my part, I've used both in past with similar (read: mediocre to poor) results.

I only get out on the ice 2 - 3 times per winter so I don't have a great deal of empirical evidence upon which to base my decision and was hoping that some of you folks that have a lot more experience might chime in and share your thoughts.

From a convenience perspective, I feel the artificial stuff is preferrable, but if real minnows consistently out-perform then I woudl be inclined to go that way -- I need all the advantage I can get.

I look forward to reading your thoughts.

Cheers,
Dave

good question. like you ive used both, and the same results. but isnt that fishing? i mean when fish are feeding I mean feeding hard they will gladly gulp the gulp. but when they arnt and timmid its hard to get them to take the real minnow let alone a hunk of plastic lol I for one have a hard time hitting the ice with out some minnows in tow,,,,,, Kinda feel naked in a crowd so to speak lol I marked a few this morning and couldnt get them to attack a real minnow. I just cant see for the life of me how Gulp would have made any differance at all. but saying that if I was out and only had gulp with me,,,, I would not feel the same way and no doubt be wishing i had a few muds right now . Minnows are like flashers. Never hit the ice without them lol. just my 2 cents worth . grizz

I agree 100% with grizz. Couldn't have said it better myself. Muds are awesome minnows although I do love using Fathead minnows also!

On a similar note, has anyone ever tried using the Gulp waxies or maggots for fishing perch through the ice? Or are there any other live bait options aside from minnows that I could get ahold of near Belleville?

I've used the waxies and othe micro baits for perch with great success.
The nice thing is you can usually get a couple fish on each one.
