Arrived at Picton Thursday noon. After a bite to eat we where on the water by 2 pm. Fished Thursday from 2-5, Fri from 10:30 - 12:30 and 2:30 - 7:00. What a great 2 days, for 5 guys (2 boats) we landed 11 "eyes", one being in the slot size. Released all "eyes". Most where in the 9 - 12 lb. range, and the two biggest weighing in at 14.9 and 19. 9. Ive seen many fish weights quoted on this site and was wandering are they actual weights or are they using measurements and the "800" scale or something simular? Our weights are the 800 scale, but I've heard other scales used. Not sure what is the closest to the actual weights.
Back to the fish caught. This is our third year fishing this time of year and it keeps getting better. Last year however we caught most of our eyes in the inner bay, this year out at the Ferry. Wander why? We caught 2 of our on the down riggers and the rest flat lining using Fast Trac and Manns mostly.
What a great site. Keep up the good work, if it wasn't for this site we probably would have fished the inner bay to start out.

My buddy in the other boat caught the "hawg" (unbelievable 8O ) and he did take a picture. I don't know if it was digital or not but I'll try and get a copy and post it.

Ok guys, here is the "800 Scale" according to what I found on the internet:
The Formula:

(Girth x Girth) x Length) / 800 = weight in pounds

(girth and length are inches)

Example:

If the fish’s girth is 15 inches and its length is 29 inches, the formula would be used as follows:

15 x 15 x 29, divided by 800 = 8.16 pounds

Then the ".16" or "16/100" is converted to ounces (multiply by 16)

.16 x 16 = 2.56 or 3 ounces

so this fish is 8 pounds 3 ounces

Here's my question. How accurate is this for walleye?? Last weekend I was up and measured and weighed all of my fish, and without fail, all would be heavier using this system. For example, I caught one that had a girth of 18" and a length of 29.5" and I weighed it at 11.0 pounds. According to the formula, it would weigh 11.9 pounds. I realize that any formula represents an average for the size, but wondered how accurate guys found it. I mean, I would be happy to tell all my buddies that my fish are now quite a bit bigger than I thought  Or, perhaps my scale is off - it's a digital one but hey, my wife could have altered it to make the fish look smaller - she's not a fan of fishing

I use a digital scale myself And was never sure if it was accurate, so I weighted my down rigger weight, it was a ten lbs. weight on the scale came up to 10lbs 3 onces you add in the rubber coating and the release I had on , I guess thats pretty accurate for me after all I'm not in a tournament where the count is real important, It's more of a bragging thing

I would have to say that the formula is somewhat generous. My 13 lber that I weighed on a scale was 29 long and 20 girth and according to the formula would've been a 14 1/2 lber. Was the 19.9 weighed or calculated using this formula? What were the measurements out of curiousity? In any case, that will be one helluva fish. Can't wait to see the pics.

I have been told that the "800" scale is fairly accurate up to about 10 lbs. after that who knows? Having said that the 19.9 measured at 33" X 22" :D and the 14.9 measured at 33" X 19". As we did not have an "accurate" scale with us, we used the 800 scale.
I talked to my buddy with the 19.9 this morning and the picture he took was not digital, but I will get a copy from him within the next week and I'll scan it and post it. It will probalbly be about a week to a week and a half.
Just curious, but does anyone know what the Ontario record is for walleye?

Here is an article from this site

http://www.quintefishing.com/russ_cole_of_picton.htm

I don't know if the 22 1/4 still reigns supreme as this article is a few years old but should give you a good indication.

cheers

Here is a link to a couple of different weight calculators. The one used for pike and musky seemed to better reflect the weight of my fish vs. the one they say to use for walleye, bass etc. It also has the record weights of various fish.

Hey Ken,

Thanks for the comeback with those 2 web sites. They are very interesting. It looks like that first scale is the same as the 800 scale. The 33 X 22 comes out at 19.965.

cheers!

I have a Normark/Northmark ?? scale and was always leary of the results off it. I also puchased the Berkley. Now with regular maintenance, calibrating, they are both quite accurate. Check them against a postal scale I have which is deadly accurate (just too big for carrying in the boat  )....

Maybe this will help.......have a 32" x 21" on the wall.....weighed by a proper scale at 14 lbs 7 ounces. I would think that fish was approx 16lbs give or take 1lb. Got to get yourself a proper scale.....those berkley's are right on the money!!!

Without getting into all the minutia detail, that big walleye is a stellar trophy. My biggest ever walleye was almost a mirror image of your biggun'.... a 32 X 22 fat fish taken off the Pickering Generating Station many years ago, and mounted for a friend's office (before the onset of replica mounts). That fish was weighed on an inspected scale at 15 lbs. 12 ounces, so thinking (like some others here) your fish was somewhere between 16 - 17 1/2 pounds. That's a monster and certainly one of the biggest walleye known to the board this year. Well done!

Len,

the Ontario record walleye is 22.25 lbs (36.5 inches). I believe that it was caught in the Niagara River.
