Quinte Fishing

Hi Guys,
I've been reading the posts on this board for awhile now and drooling at all the big eye's you guys are catching. I just wish the guys would post more pictures with their reports.
Anyways, I have always wanted to fish the bay and get my own double-digit eye LOL! Which is just highly unlikely in the kawartha's.
Late this summer I bought a bigger boat than my 14' foot aluminum and was wonder if you guys think it would be safe to fish your area in it. It's a Ranger Fisherman tiller with a 60hp and is 16'11 by 79 3/4 or something like that.

For years, my dad and I fished the Bay of Quinte spring and fall with just a 15' 135-pound aluminum cartopper. We kicked ass back then, just like we [sometimes] do now.

Going on Big Water requires Good Judgement. The closest I ever came to dying [on the water - I could tell you some climbing and caving stories, though] was in Neil's extraordinarily seaworthy Lund - we hung out at Thompson's and Sherman's too long, and had to battle horrific crisscrossing waves creating double-crests and double-troughs. Were it not for Neil's driving, we'd most likely have been done for. We would have died if the motor had quit. Well, my dad and I would have, cuz we didn't have our Mustang Suits back then, which was Just Plain Stupid. There was at least one ten-footer that crashed over the bow. It was totally dire. I still get sweaty hands thinking about it. It was also really stupid to have tried to get back to Picton. We should have holed up somewhere safe.

What you need to do is just be careful. Your boat is fine - it's WAY better and more seaworthy-looking than our little cartopper.

Become familiar with the weather patterns and know what happens when the wind picks up. "He who fishes and runs away [when the wind picks up] lives to fish another day."

However, the bottom line is DFU.

Hey Ranger Guy,

You should be OK. My boats a 15' 10" Legend and i have no problems. Your motors bigger too 60hp vs my 25hp.....so you should be able to scoot anywhere if req'd....

Well, thank you guys very much. I just love this boat Well, maybe we'll see each other on the water next year. I just need to get a better towing vehcile for next year. So I can fish the fall

Your Fisherman is a classic Walleye boat that can tackle most
water conditions. You can probably handle 3-4 foot waves with
confidence. With the tiller version you may get a little wet in 4-6
footers in a cross wind. Most conditions on the bay of Quinte would
be just fine with your boat. Stay home in gale force winds. It is no
fun no matter how big your boat is. Especially at the boat ramp with
an onshore wind.
