First decent morning to fish this week. Fished Mexico Bay. Trolled north and found dirty water with no fish. Ran south and set up and went 8 for 12 with one nice fish. 1.8-2.2 mph in 7-12 fow all on spoons off boards. I've got some good pictures but still haven't figured out how to post them.

I find the best way to post photos is to set up a free account with photobucket.com. You can then copy the image file and paste it in your posting here. very simple.

Can't wait to see the photos. :D

what is your preferred method to run spoons off your boards?

short core segments? short copper segments? inline/snap weights?

thanks,
Steve

you could but they would only go about a foot or 2 down. flutter spoons are really light and don't sink if they are going at any speed. thats why guys run them off riggers, core, copper, and dipsys.

I was running straight 10 lb. mono with no weight just a snap swivel and the spoon. Dropping back 75-100' behind boards.

I'm not sure exactly how deep they were down. I was running Stingers, they were not getting hung on bottom and i was catching fish.

I quit running spoons for browns unless im doing it off of my riggers. Ok if you are going to run spoons then just run a small splitshot or two about five feet up. This will get them down just a lil bit. ok here is my set up for brown fishing. I run nothing but stickbaits anymore. Pull Rapala j-11's and you cant go wrong. Alot of stickbaits work but those are my favorite. I run nothing but straight 10lb mono. I use a planer mast but inline boards will work and flat lining will as well. 2.3 is my average speed although i often run alot faster. I make my turns sometimes 4-5 mph and fish will hit then. get in tight and look for the warmest water. Thats the real key right now trust me. you dont have to run your leads real long as a matter of fact we actually do something on the riggers here that we call the 4x4 rule. we put the spoon 4ft behind the ball and the ball 4ft down. it works! Ive watched browns come up and smack it.

Mike, 4' down and 4' back. WOW!!! I would NEVER have thought that. Thats nuts. I have had some older charter guys tell me to run a spoon or J13 in the wash of the boat for Coho's. Never tried it, cause we don't get a lot of coho's here, but I guess they are attracted by the boat and hit the lure in the wash. Same concept for the browns but I've always heard how skittish the spring browns are. Guess everything you hear isn't always true.

4x4 that is something I will have to remember.

Thank you for sharing. I hope our brown fishery gets as good as yours one day.

Scott

ok so this might sound like a stupid question........ yesterday the warmenst water i could find was 41.2 where most everyplace else it was around 39.1. this 41.2 was in 3 FOW.......... only way i could find that temp was to actually run my boat in close ..... so the question would be would you just assume so close to shore is where you want your boards most the time ? would the browns actually be in that close? I lost one yesterday that had to be out in 5 foot and believe it or not I was running the boat in shallow and the board was out away from shore? maybe the boat spooked the fish out? how far back is yer line off the board? 4 feet off the ball I would assume you dont have to be far back from a board either? and when running the rigger are you out in deeper water? 12 FOW or more maybe?
