Heard from one of my members who was out fishing last weekend and got checked by the OPP.Apparently the 2BC fire extinguishers I'm sure most of us have been carrying for years are now to small and we all need to increase the size to a 5BC extinguisher. He was let go with a warning but was told the fine is over $200 so check yours.

I did a little research and checked the Transport Canada website and found the new requirements for powered vessels under 6M or 19'8"
"One (1) Class 5BC fire extinguisher, if the pleasure craft is equipped with an inboard engine, a fixed fuel tank of any size, or a fuel-burning cooking, heating or refrigerating appliance"

http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/marinesafety/de ... m-1791.htm

The requirements for powered vessels over 6M or 19' 8" are:
"One (1) Class 5BC fire extinguisher, if the pleasure craft is a power-driven vessel, plus another class 5BC fire extinguisher if the pleasure craft is equipped with a fuel-burning cooking, heating or refrigerating appliance"

http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/marinesafety/de ... 6m-424.htm

Apparently the changes came into effect Jan. 01,2010
I love the way they start enforcing something without any notification!!!
Jamie

I kinda dont understand shelly were does my boat fall under? its 18'9 do I still have to up grade my Fire extinguisher too the 5 BC still. The way I was reading it it states a boat with a stove on it has to have a 5 BC. I will replace it anyways to be save.

Thanks

Ryan

If you have a fixed fuel take of any size...you need the 5BC extinquisher...wonder if that same law goes in the States....no matter , i fish Canada more than i do the American side of the river, guess i better upgrade

So, I have done a little research trying to understand the difference between the old and the new and it boils down to the 5BC being able to cover twice the area of the smaller extinguisher. Also, for those of us from the states, this new reg does not affect us (according to the Coast Guard person i spoke with today at the Clayton Boat show)

Guys, its been a 5BC since April 1 1999. That's the oldest safe boating guide I have. The idea was the smaller ones wouldn't do the job.

I don't know why you need a fire extinguisher anyway. Let's face it, you've got insurance in addition to being surrounded water.

Eighteen more sleeps 'til the Mux and Macs Opening Weekend. You're all invited. 8)

We're one of the TrailerPark Boys. Forget the number (5?). We'll be there Friday afternoon around 2-3ish. Wear something frilly, Dan.

Posted: Mon Apr 12, 2010 8:09 am Post subject: Clarification on the Fire Extinguishers Regulations

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Guys, thanks to Al Crampton and Mike Howe,I now have some clarification on the regulations for fire extinguishers.I may have been misinformed about this being a new change to the regulations but the OPP are now going to start enforcing the proper rating. To avoid a fine, just having a fire extinguisher in the boat may not be sufficient. Please take a good look at your extinguishers and try and find the rating.
A class 5BC rated fire extinguisher does not mean it's a 5lb bottle. You may have a 2.5lb extinguisher, but it might be a 10BC.
The ABC rating determines the type of fire it will extinguish (A = Chemical, B = fuel, C = electrical). The numeric rating actually refers to relative “fire-fighting effectiveness”
For Type A fires, a 1 would have the equivalent of 1¼ gallons of water, a 2 would be equivalent to 2½ gallons, 3 would be 3¾ gallons of water, and so forth. For Type B and Type C fires, the number represents the square footage the extinguishing agent would cover. For example, a number 2 would cover two square feet and a 5 would extinguish an area five square feet and so forth.
Hopefully none of us gets nailed this season
Jamie
