Hay Bay Report - May 28th

Hay Bay Larry & I headed out on Tuesday AM from the North-east launch of Hay Bay.

Trolled for a couple of hours trying 7- 10 feet with various lures, didn't get a strike, fished aropund Hoffmans Is, marked some fish in 14-16 feet.

Headed to Wagon wheel Point(across from Blakewoods), marked fish there also, tried the Bayview shoal for a pass or two, we stuck out again.

This is getting tiring, writing about our inability to catch fish.

Back in a couple of weeks.

Superdad:

I've been following your postings for quite some time hoping to get some real advice. One thing seems to be quite consistent: you never catch a thing and the fishing is always bad! What’s the deal buddy? I’ve been fishing the Bay for 15 years and rarely come up empty. Are you using hooks on your lures?

Don't know what to say, there are people that I talk to that are getting some fish and we see the odd fish being caught. We experiment a lot and try not and do the same thing over and over. This leads us to some fishless outings.

We rarely pound the same stretch of water over and over, so our approach is often contrary to the accepted norm of Quinte Fishing.

We rarely drift over a piece of water using the spinner and worm bait, we'll slow down with drift socks if trolling downwind.

We cast shoreline right now and will continue to cast the weedlines as they really take off and grow.

Always remember: "There's more to fishing, than catching fish"

I have been out twice since the last time i was out with superdad. We caught 4 walleye the first time,and 5 the second time. Things are looking up when i'm not with superdad!!!! I'm sure he'll start hitting them some time soon!...Haybay Larry

David will have his day to shine as I have fished with him and we have both caught Walleyes ! Now that the shad have entered the bay - he will catch his fish on his favorite CC SHADS ! Good Luck David

For whatever this is worth, I notice a couple of things in common with most people who don't catch:

1) They troll too fast (SLOW, SLOW, SLOW's the way to GO). Zig zag your boat, do what ever it takes to slow your boat down to a crawl.
2) They use mostly crankbaits. I have used 2 type of lures for the past 15 years: Bakers Bait Canadian Mint spinners. The other one's a secret but it's a spinner. I know big fish have been caught on cranks but I just don't find them as productive over the long run as spinners. Not at least at Quinte.
