I just bought a boat and would love to be able to do some Salmon fishing. It's too small to head out to Scotch Bonnet but can you catch Salmon closer to Wellington? I would love to start Slammin Salmon!

sometimes they are cought right out front in the lake but the most productive places seem to be Salmon point or the Bonnet they roam around some. trick is being there when they are there.

if your boat is too small to run to salmon pt. or the bonnet, try west pt. or wait till fall when they start staging to come in the harbour

Bottom Bouncer,

How small is your boat? If you watch the weather and pick your days you can get out there I'm sure.

You seem to not need the warning but, be careful. No fish is worth your life. The big lake can get unfriendly in a hurry. That said if you are smart about it and careful I'm sure you can get a few days out at the bonnett.

I remember one day when the temp.was right and the bait was there, a pack of boats getting them right off the sandbanks in fairly shallow 50-70'.

There are guys going to Main Duck in 16'ers and sometimes they ride out the big waves better than some of the bigger boats.

I only have a 16 footer and had no trouble making it out to salmon point. The day I went, Lake O was calmer than West lake!
Though Im just starting to work on my salmon fishing resume!

Growing up on the big O i have seen some amazing weather changes on the water , running to the Ducks from Collins Bay in dead calm only to return to port in 8 footers with clients chumming the lake , always be respectful of the lake and never boat outside of your experiance or capabilities .if you are not confident you would be further ahead to spend a few dollars and have someone like Scott from westlake williows take you out ,cheaper than losing your boat or your life , that said their will be days when it is safe for small boats close to shore , go west toward the Bonnet look for a green barn and fish 100 yards offshore , when the fish are on this area will give you what you are looking for Be safe !

I just moved here last year but I've been Salmon fishing in Northern Ontario on Lake Superior all my life. I'll be cautious but I will be out there! Thanks to everyone for your info it is greatly appreciated! Hopefully I can get the smoker going this summer after all. Nice to see people watching out for each other.

Learn to be a bit of a weather man....trust the weather dock talk and have at it. I have zero fear in taking my smaller boat out on Lake O. This was last weekend...

Thanks Scott. Yep no feeling like it. My Pops called me 2 days later still beaming about it. Best of Luck this summer out there, it appears the lake is setting up nicely already. Way better than the disaster last year.
