Hi guys,

New to the discussion board.

I don't fish heavy cover all that often, but would like to jig and pig a bit. I don't have any experience with a casting reel and was wondering if a medium/heavy spinning rod and larger spinning reel with heavier line would work.

Obviously a bait cast is the best set-up, but I'd like to avoid the birds nests...

Thanks,

Mike

i dont get bird nests very often at all when pitching, mainly when your trying to bomb a light crankbait into the wind!

Yes you could do it. But you really dont have the power in a spinnig rod like you you do a bait caster when pitching jigs into heavy cover. I fine I have better accurcy with my casting rods then spinnig. With a flipping jig they usually have a stout hook which will be a heavy wire hook. You need backbone to put that hook into the fishes mouth. Using braided line does help but its still a heavy hook. If you get a heavy action spinnig outfit it may be better. Were do you live Mike I can let you use my casting outfits to get a hang of it if you like.

I still get birds nest you will get good over time. If you have a good casting outfit rod and reel. I use a Ardent Xs 1000 and a Dobyns Champion Extreme 784 ML. Its a heavy action rod design for jigs its and awesome rod let me know if you want to learn I can help you.

Ryan

Thanks for the information, Ryan. It totally makes sense. I live in Belleville, but work out of town during the week - lots of driving.

That's a nice set-up you're using. I'm going to play around with one of my dad's bait casters (more of a musky outfit) a little bit this weekend and see if I can pick-up the technique. I really appreciate the offer to help me learn.

Thanks again for the information and have a good weekend!

Mike
