Quinte Fishing

Hi folks - I'm new to your board - and I'm new to Quinte fishing (well not really - it's been 15 or 20 years since I,ve last fished the area) and I was hoping some of you Quinte veterans could give me a bit of information.

I've got some vacation time available the week after thanksgiving (Canadian) - this year Oct 11-16th and I was thinking about planning an outing to the Bay of Quinte with my adult son - in search of some of the infamous Quinte Walleye I've read so much about over the years.

In a typical season is this too early in the fall to expect reasonable fishing/results ?

What approach/method and/or location would most of you suggest would be the best option at that itme of the year ?

I'm on a bit of a budget and was thinking about doing the tenting thing - again that would depend on the weather. Are there any other economical options for the budget minded person (accommodations).

I've got a 1750 Crestliner fishhawk so I can manage some weather on the water.

i have stayed at the twin peaks motel in napanee before... not very far from picton or desseronto to launch from. its not the best but its only like 40 or 50 bucks a night.

as for methods i would say either trolling or jigging are going to be your best bets for big walleye.

anytime you can fish quinte is good
october we like to troll long reach with ereidecent 800 series reef runners and #9 shad raps

we move down below the ferry to down to the bat cave [sometimes]
with the same lures
now that being said we sometimes do good other times that darn ole SKUNK is around.
will prolly be up middle october bringing the nephew who will be in PA to visit from
TEXAS for a couple weeks [he never caught a walleye]

First off welcome aboard. This really is a great site with great members that will help as much as they can.
I don't think its ever a bad time to fish the bay. Although mid October may be a bit early for the fall giants you should still do reasonably well.
I don't think you'll catch the numbers of large fish you would in Nov or Dec. but I doubt you'll be dissappointed.
I would try mid-sized cranks and maybe even some harnesses and spinners depending on water temps.

Thanks very much guys. I'm very much a weekend angler so i appreciate the info/direction. The areas you've mentioned should give me a general idea as to where to start.

A couple more questions - the trolling idea i get - try and locate schools of bait fish and generally you locate active fish. But as to jigging do you usually jig while drifting flats or weed lines or do you typically anchor and work points, reefs, etc ?

Are there any outfitters/bait dealers/local tackle shops you would recommend i consult when i get there ?

Well, if the weather's right during my vacation I think I'll give'er a go.

Anybody know where i can get a decent map of the bay with some of the locations i've already heard fellas talking about, i.e. the ferry, bat cave etc ?
