As I was packing for my NB Atlantic Salmon trip, I got a call from Laker John who wondered if I wanted to go fishing on Friday, the 10th. He thought that perhaps we could out and find some suspended fish and see if we could attract them. Sure, I said, Let's Go.
We launched at the Ferry and headed east and began to mark fish in 60' of water. Broke out the rods / lures and the planer boards and started fishing. We marked fish as we continued easterly.
We marked a large concentration of fish in some areas that were were only 45' deep and as we passed over them, the outer board went off. Laker John has modified his planer boards with a "tattle flag modification' using elastic bands and some wire. They work great, Saved $25.00 per board. Back to the fish..... I swung the outer board to the back and brought the fish to the net. Laker John made a scoop and she was ours. The fish took a discontinued Spro Lure that we have had success with in the past.
We got the scale out and she tipped at 6.5 lbs - a nice fish - but she was bleeding from the gills, so she went into the box.
The winds picked up and we finally headed for the lee of the north shore and tolled to the lighthouse, motored over to the BatCave and tried again but the NE wind just pushed us out of shape. We trolled the north shore back to the ferry and called it a day at 1445.
We had gone hunting for suspended fish and we were able to get them to strike (not often - but once counts), it's a fall technique that we wanted to try before the fall.
