This post will be for the Northern hunters. As most hunters will tell you the deer population N of 7hwy has really taken a drop. Up until those wicked winters we had it was not hard to get a good pole of venison. The past 2 years in the area we hunt only 4 deer have been spotted. Last season we seen more moose then we did deer (5 moose and 3 deer). With that in mind we decided to give moose hunting a try seeing most of us were not heading on our usual "Way Up North" moose hunt. We managed to secure some private land around the Denbigh area but were not successful in drawing an adult tag. However with the need to get out for a hunt and an excuse for time off work we decided to give it a try.
Opening morning started off with me jumping a cow and a calf. With only calf tags in our pockets and the calf running tight to the cow a safe shot was not presented. The bull that was with them decided to split in another direction leaving them to fend for themselves..lol. That was the end of seeing anymore moose. We only hunted for 1 1/2 days but we did manage to see 8 deer. 8 DEER is like 4yrs of deer sightings the way our luck had been going the last 2yrs. Im sure they will find a much better hiding spot come open season but it sure was refreshing seeing a good population. I realize that some areas it may be better but in most areas not near as good. All and all it sure was nice to see and with a little luck on mother natures side deer could be on the rise again.
Best of luck to everyone on a safe hunt this up coming season. Jason

We to hunt just north of 7 and were lucky enough to get 2 calves.Like you we only got 1 deer last year and it was the only one we saw all week. The year before we got 4 but they were the only ones we saw.Now the good news.We had 11 deer sightings last week while moose hunting. The bad news again is that all but 1 were does and fawns and we have 1 antlerless tag for 8 guys. But I would much rather be seeing deer that I can't shoot than seeing nothing. So I'm pretty pumped about the deer hunt.We also saw 4 bears ,2 came to say high at the camp 8O .

Not having to drive 20 hours to Moose hunt sounds good to me but not seeing deer in deer season blows also. I guess you will find out in a couple of years which things are going to go with yoiur property's. Congrats on your moose hunts and sightings. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM MOOSE MEAT . :)

Congrats on your successful hunt shamanic. Its pretty hard to beat a good feast of moose meat. All of the deer we had seen in moose season were does and fawns. I did notice some buck sign and had seen 1 fresh scrape. It will take the rut to kick in to make those big boys come out from hiding. With that many does running around im sure at least 1 will make a grave mistake. Our group consists of 8 hunters and we only faired 1 doe tag as well. I don't mind giving up a few years of not shooting does as long as the heard replenishes its self and the ministry follows with upping the anterless tag draw.....(fat chance of that happening)...lol. Be sure to keep me informed on your deer hunt. Best of luck. Jason

A friend and I couldn't make the big moose trip this year so had a mini two day hunt\holiday around Weslemekoon. We had a bit of moose track soup but like others are saying, we saw deer and deer tracks everywhere we went.
