Just wondering what sort of price is everyone paying for their minnows? I heard of 3 dozen costing $17.00. Thought that was kinda steep.

Superdad,
I buy my minnows at Tightlines in Pickering (3-4"shiners for about $4.50 + tax a dozen. I usually buy 2 doz. but get 4 doz.
I have never bought minnows in Bellville.
As far as I am concerned Tightlines is the BEST strictly fishing store from T.O to Bellville.
Good prices & Excellent selection

Speckhunter :D

Hi Superdad:
It would not surprise me that minnow prices have gone up. Tough to keep and find at the present time (many, many have been harvested as bait over the years making some areas very low)

- personally I had a problem getting some good quality ones in the Napanee area (could not even trap a good quality mud this summer it seemed near Nap); Moons in Deseronto is seemingly very consistent

Hope you guys and gals are having a good season
Don Stokes

Ah, Mtl is the best for everything. There is a shop in St-Henri that can't be beat. You go in and ask for 3 dozen, he counts them to 45 of the prime size then adds two handful of whatever he scoops up for 7.50$. 2.50/doz for medium and a dozen is never less then 15 minnows.

The difference is that in Mtl, you can fish with 10 tip-ups so minnows have to be cheap. Imagine 3 guys with 30 tip-ups in Ontario, they would pay an arm and a leg for bait.

Before leaving for Quinte this fall, I asked this guuy for 30$ of minnows and he kept scooping until our bait-well was black.

BTW, I was wondering what kind of minnows you guys get up around Quinte???

Up in Ottawa, they have pretty much only emeralds and in Mtl, it's a mix of commons, goldens, emeralds and suckers mostly, to name a few.

Saturday morning I bought 3 dozen minnows (2 doz. large, 1 doz. small) at the Fish Ontation shop on highway 400 just south of wonderland and it cost me about $13 with tax. I usually find these guys to be a complete ripoff on most things they sell but this seemed pretty reasonable to me. I agree with the comment about Tightlines in Pickering (Brock road south of the 401 on the west side) always gives very generous counts so although the per dozen price does not seem better than anywhere wlse you always get a lot more then you pay for and they always seem to be good quality.

Work is for people who don't know how to fish.

Manning, I moved to Montreal 4 years ago from Quinte and couldn't believe it when I heard we were allowed 10 tip ups. I am in St. Lazare, where do you fish from? I usually get bait from CR Sport in Dorion and they charge me 2.50/doz for medium. They also have a special for 7.00/3 doz and he just scoops whatever, big or small.

One thing I've heard from some of the locals here in Ottawa, that's supposed to be new this year is, if you keep more than 12 dozen to sell, you have to get a licence now? Something to do with proper facilities to maintain them etc. Anyone else heard this :?:

I'm told this could be the reason there aren't as many available. That being said, I haven't seen a shortage in my area :!:

They're running $5.50 dozen or so....

Hi Superdad, in Napanee the old fellow there is charging 5.00/doz, all muds and the like, and they seem smallish, and he counts. :?

Mark's in battersea runs about 4.00 - 4.50 but also has shiners, and is somewhat generous, I think the size is a little better there as well.

There's a fellow in Harrowsmith, phoned him(in the book), his price about the same as Mark's, said he had muds 2.5 maybe 3", only needed to call before going up to ensure he was available in morning.

See post about MOON's, although I didn't get a price in the response. :?:

Heading to Bay on Sunday, perhaps we'll cross paths someday, good luck this weekend.

I just found a great deal on minnows "$3.00 for a scoop"at Fishmaster Bait & Tackle in Dunville (on the Grand River), had to be at least 3 dozen minnows, all very small, smaller than I wanted as I heard the walleye were biting below the dam in Dunville. Unfortunately they were pumping water from a bit of construction and I could not get out onto the ice so the day was a bit of right off. Used them for Crappie at Valens and did okay, lots of bites but only caught about 6 small crappie over 3 hours.

Jay, I live in beautiful Verdun. I have been having the fishing of my life around the island this season. I am always looking for new partners so if you wanna hook-up, email me at mannyjoseph2002@yahoo.com .

About the 10 line law, don't get me started. If you find a good walleye spot, 2 jigging rods is all you need.

To all those who have never fished around Mtl, imagine 5 guys using the maximum amount of lines. Now, imagine these 5 guys walking into a community hole where these 5 guys set-up around 15 guys. That's 20 guys which means 200 tip-ups. Ok no, 180 tip-up and 20 jigging rods.
