Has anyone open water fished for "hawg" eyes in the Detroit River this time of year (feb to april). If so, how and where are my prime concerns. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, hawg1

My understanding is that it's primarily a jig bite, with a lot of the best fisihing in American water. Not to say that you won't catch anything in Canadian waters. It all depends on conditions. Very fast current, and lots of freighters so you'll need to be paying attention to everything going on around you.

There's nowhere that I know of to put a boat in until early to late April, that's when we head down

YO & G. Thanks for your input. G, how does this fishery compare with BOQ? Just another walleye fanatic looking for some open water action before our season opens. All the best, Hawg1

I think it's very different,
The most popular method of fishing is jigging, but the river has approx. 7 mph current. The trick is keeping your line vertical by using an electric or back trolling. You have to use use heavy jigs, 1/2-3/4oz. Some tip them with minnows, some use twister tails. There are many good spots on the states side, the most popular spot on the Canadian side is out front of the Hiriam Walker plant.

Good Luck
G
