There are a number of interesting models, with Kenora, Ont., and Lk Simcoe (Can. championship) having the most promise in regards to entrys, quality of prizes, etc. etc. Those are the two best "Canuck" (I hope you people do not take offence to some of "us" saying that name.)

Logistics are difficult, without a small core of dedicated staff/volunteers. With them, success is possible with a 3 yr. timeframe to become known and to grow, etc. Without it, most flounder into oblivion.

Deflecting pressure off of the primary target species, is paramount to garner respect, with any well respected Fish and Wildlife management, at the present and foreseeable time. This means including additional fishing opportunities, which for a place like BOQ logically means yellow and/or white perch and northern pike.

Most tournaments, derbys worth mentioning now ALWAYS, put something back into the area held for conservation, family's etc. Those that do not, are usually again.....too small, and hold very very little interest to the bulk of rec./avid anglers.

I hope that this is of some assistance in answering your question.

I believe the BIG problem is that most open water derbies are now catch-N-release. This would not be possible during the ice fishing season. We wouldn't like to kill a 25inch plus fish for every applicant.

There are a number of smaller scale derbies that occur during the ice fishing season (Legions, etc).

Also.... the "fishing lake simcoe board" members regularly have informal weekend outings of groups of board members that they class as "derbies". I believe it is a 50/50 type event, proceeds going to the board, or conservation.

This could also work for quinte fishing board members.

LOCAL MINI DERBY WIPES OUT FISH POPULATION!

I think that was the lead in they used on the local TV news. A group of about 30 -40 had a five bucks in a jar type derby followed by a fish fry. Unfortunatly it was on the same day as a pro bass event, one of the pro's took offence, filmed some dead fish and along with a lot of BS it ends up on the news.

You got to be carefull when you bet your buddy you can catch the biggest fish.

I have heard about a catch and release ice fishing tourney somewhere, but cannot recall the specific location. It was held in a very small area (cordoned off I thinK??), on a larger body of water, with a central station or and judges, etc.. I wish I could remember more, as it sounded sort of neat.... I have no idea how it turned out, let alone if it was a big deal.
