Today was an absolutely brutal day. We were at Potters in the morning and then came out again in the afternoon at 2. Didn't catch a damn thing! I started fishing the b of q last year in the winter, didn't catch even a perch. So far this year 0 for 1. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. Was using a crocodile spoon, tipped with a minnow- nothing. Then switched to a 1/4 ounce black/orange jig head with minnow- light taps, probably a perch. Had 3 tipups set up, minnow on one, on the other, minnow and perch spoon 6" above- nothing. The other two guys I was with were using a chartreuse spoon tipped with a minnow, and a silver spoon tipped with minnow- nothing!! Friggen discouraging. We went together all year last year and got nothing. Not sure what the hell else we are supposed to do!

don't have a flasher, is this an essential piece of equipment? Does a portable depth finder work just as well? I have one, but didn't take it out today.

Portable depth finder will help you see whats down there. Ive used them before but I really like the flasher. I dont think its essential alot of people dont use them and do well... I think they help you figure out a pattern then replicating that is the key or figuring out what mood the fish are in can be figured out as well with a finder or flasher.

I personally think a flasher is, but that's just my personal opinion. And like martycoo says, there are a lot who do very well with out it. I went out with one popular guide called Hawg Hunter and he knows his stuff and he never uses electronics. As for ur portable fish finder, how old is it? If she's REAL old u can use it to see ur depth but that's about it. I wouldn't bother dragging it out with u if that's all it does though. The key is to be able to see ur lure and the fish as close to real time as possible.

You will learn valuable triggering techniques with a flasher, and catch fish you'd never know were even down there. You'll also spend less time fishing in places that have no fish. A flasher is better then a depth finder because it's real time. depth finders lag a bit. My tranducer went one trip last year and I had to fish without a flasher and I was VERY bored.
