Favourite presentations for BOQ Walleye

Being a BOQ icefishing noob, I need a few suggestions for Walleye presentations under the ice. My last trip out I watched a few people catch 2 to 4 eyes each, and I didn't even get a hit. Is there a certain distance off bottom, or a certain colour/size/pattern I should be using? I tried local live bait under a williams wabler half/half, with slow one foot lifts and drops with the lure touching bottom at the lowest point of the swing. I tried bad boys, jigging raps, and finess single hook under a split shot with a single darter minnow hooked under the dorsal fin, and nothing. I'm heading out to try again at first light Wednesday - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Good question as usual, colour, size, how far off bottom, winning number for Lotto Max? Everyone has their own preference, mine are, Pimple (red/orange), 1/2 oz Champ (blue, red, or green (chartruse if you can find it)) and the Buck-Shot rattle spoon (BRS5 or BRS7). I use a vex flasher and prefer 1 ft off the bottom. Double minnow hooked from under the head with the hook through the head and between the lookers.

Many others will have other thoughts, I'm only one person and this year on 8 outings, I haven't been skunked yet.

Ur jiging sounds about right. Contact w bottom now and then is good. Keep ur bait a cuppla inches off bottom other wise when ur jiging. Also try using sharp snaps of the rod, but mix it up w the lift u mentioned u were doing. Have a good selection of different color lures: silver, gold, green, etc. Sweedish pimples, buckshot, mr.champ, little Cleo, side winder just to name a few. Also have a good selection of sizes. Expearament w all combinations of colour, size and jiging style. Do u have a flasher? If not u should invest in one. Also try a 8 to 12 lb fluorocarbon leader of 24" or so w a tiny swivel attatched to 10 to 15 lb power pro ice line. Oh and use a tiny snap to make ur life easer for changing lures.

Oh and experiment w 1 to 3 minnows and even just a minnow head if the bites real slow!

Thanks for the tips guys!!! I forgot to mention that I was running 8lb diamater (20lb real test) power pro line with a seaguard 10 pound leader (about 1.5 feet long). I also talked to a few guys out on the ice who had caught fish, and they told me they were tipping their lures with 3 minnows. I found that a bit odd - isn't that a very un-natural presentation, 3 minnows on a jigging spoon? Also they mentioned a flasher/finder was a must so you could see the fish coming in, and raise the bait until you get a bite - maybe that was my problem, I was fishing blind because my FF battery was dead so I left it at home. I guess it's the little things that add up to equal a good outing?

Yes the little things add up. I marked 5 fish yesterday and caught 4 of them so there is little room for error. If you notice guys around you catching fish bring your bait up off bottom for a bit. There's a good chance active fish are close by and they can't stand seeing a meal go up and away. If you can swing it you should get a flasher.

Find a rythunm, pick how far you want to be off bottom, If you are foot off bottom you want to stop the lure at the same height on the way down, most walleyes hate it when they get jigged off bottom and there coming up and the lure drops below them. Don't be afraid to bring the lure up high and let it drop. Just something I've had success With when I use to fish blind. Its a hole different ball game fishing with a flasher.

Great info here. I'm new to BOQ - where should I start, what depth? Thanx for the advice. I usually fish Simcoe with many successful perch trips.

3 minnows were working last night, i couldn't get a fish to lift off bottom with out 3 on. usually i only use 1 but last night the magic number was 3

dave. you owe me 8 bucks for minnows lol.......... what you ment to say is you only use one minnow when your buyin the minnows . your fish costed me 12 bucks lol ...... I shook my head when i looked in my minnow bucket this morning ... , turd bird............
