Managed to get out on the ice for a couple of hours on Sunday, in front of my parents place. With the 25 min walk out, time spent digging the snow away to expose the ice, drilling 10 holes, and rigging my girlfriend and step dad up I only got about 1 hour of “wet line” time. But I managed to get 7 perch, the biggest being about 9 inches.

The bite was so light I had to stare at the rod tip and watch for it to slowly move down, half a inch, then back up … that was the hit!? Anyways had family things I had to get to but would of loved to explore more and try to find some jumbos and big bluegills…maybe in a couple of weeks when I come back with my buddies.

Attached is a picture from Sunday before the camera battery died (or it would have been of the perch)

Mako,
Glad to hear you got some but it sure sounded like a heck of alot of work for one hour of fishing time. We all need the exercise.
What did you get them on??

I thought I was going to have more time but something ended up coming up, I was glad I got to at least feel some fish on the line after all that.

I got them on a #2 Jigging Rapala (perch colour) and I tipped it with a little Berkley Gulp! Maggot.

Mako,

Was out that way myself last weekend, but damn was it cold when those winds starting pickin' up!
Didn't have a hut...
Managed a couple of perch nibbles but no catches but did catch a lot of frost bite!
As a seasoned ice-fisherman, what do you recommend against freezing your bits and pieces while out on the ice all day? Any special gear you wearin'?
Was my first time fishing so I need some advice, since I don't want to spoil it for the next time!

Seasoned ice fishermen …I won’t go that far ..LOL

Hmmmmm For some reason I think you were closer to were I was fishing than you think, I actually think you were with me Rookie Fisherwoman

Well after getting you the pack boots and warm toque and mitts, I think you got to get your self a survival suit. That Columbia jacket and pants might be good for snowboarding but not out on the ice.

I better start saving my coins now for one, if I want to be spending more time out on the ice with me, especially with out a hut.

Hey Mako

Try spring bobbers on the end of your rod , these will detect even the slightest bite, I'v been using them for two years for crappie fishing thru the ice and they work great
