i have a coleman blackcat I think its called. 3000btu and I personally wish I would have gone to at least 9000btu. I have a 4 man clam portable and it barely heats it. Mr Buddy has some good heaters but they will run you a bit more then 50 bucks. check out kijiji

I'm not sure how air tight your hut is, but in absense of a propane heater, I've used an apple juice can, a roll of toilet paper to fit the cylinder and methyl hydrate....very cheap heat and no fumes provided theres a small draft.

I purchased a sportcat and wish i had gone with something larger. It's great for keeping your hands warm, but if the wind is wippin it can't put put enought heat to keep the portable warm. Have to use the coleman stove as well. My advice is go bigger if you can afford it. You can always turn it down if it gets to warm.

Tight lines

50$ won't get u anything worth while. U should use Velcro and stick Refletex insulation in ur hut. I do in mine and beleave me when it's -20 out w wind; im in my Frabil Refuge in all but a sweater! If u like to b real comfortable on the ice then Reflectex is the way to go. Oh and you could get away w a 50$ heater if u insulate ur portable hut.

I'm thinking of upgrading to a 5lb tank with a top attatchment. those things pump out the heat like crazy, and a 5lb tank will last a few outings and light. Probably just as cheap when you figure in all the small coleman tanks you buy throughout the season.

50 bucks could get u a sunflower.

1st you should decide how many btu's u will need and if weight is an issue (do u walk by foot) then u might need to spend more on a heater.

i walk and have a coleman sunflower type 9 - 14 000 btu's on a 5 lb tank i use in my flip hut. love the heat but tuff with snow when the tank is full and space is always an issue.

i have a smaller heater that runs off 1 lb cyl but only use it on nicer days in my flip or in my suitcase shelter as it doesn't need as much heat cause of the floor.

i also have an adapter to refill the 1 ib's off a bigger tank because of the cost and waste.
(u can get them at "love to fish lake simcoe" 705 456 8745,cabela's too and other places i'm sure, the best 20 bucks u'll spend)

mr buddy heaters were not around when i bought my heaters

princess auto has a sale on heaters not sure what stock is like

hope this helps

buy a colman single burner stove i ran mine for the first year i had my clam you just have to be careful not to knock it over or against the hut cause its an open flame!!! I think they are like $24 and save up and by a mr. heater protable buddy here they are like $129(princess auto) but i went to the us and got mine for $79 ( gander mtn) while ur there buy a case of one pound tanks !!!!!!!!! here they are $5 a pop i got them for $3

or go to home depot and get the mr burner for a bbq tank, buddy of mine has one but its overkill i think it was $50 plus tank!!!

id go with the one burner stove cause it doubles as the shore lunch maker!!

You can get a Mr.Heater from Home Hardware for $64.99 they are 10,000-15,000 BTU and fasten to the tank or have a stand by it's self but you have to use a hose then.More heat then you will ever need. You can cook on it to.

i think which heater you need will depend on what kind of hut we are talking about here. i had a 5600 briefcase style, and bought the sportcat at first and returned it soon after out fist outting(not enough btus). i started to use my 2 burner stove and it did the trick but was also very fumey.i bought the portable buddy and it was best thing i ever did. i now have the big buddy for my summit and it is great. dont have to worry about it tipping and it has a LOW OXYGEN auto shut off . 18k btus and built in fan can be too hot but nice to have on the frigid days.

sunflowers are good for the price, but have to be a bit more careful, and you are forced to carry out a bulk tank.

my buddy heaters will get the job done for you thats what we use and you can figure a one pound can will last around 8 hrs we always bring an extra bottle or two along but i think there the best you can get around 80 to 100 bucks but well worth it.

I have a mr Heater, $90 bps and it works great on my two man hut.
If you want to "save money" and keep warmed buy a hose conector $20, (home hard ware) as mention on an earlear post..
That's what I did for my bbq tank. :)
Its a lot cheaper than to buy each outing a small tank.
A full tank $25 should last you a couple of seasons for sure, a small tank might last you 2 outings if you are lucky at $6 a tank.
It's an extra weight specially when you are pulling the hut by hand but im saving a lot of money and keeping very warm.
