as it was explained to me the signal that the transducers sends out is much like the light beam that a flashlight would show...small from the light getting larger as it goes.. In 15 feet of water the transducer shows a 5 foot circle on the bottom, approximatley.. The farther down you put your transducer the smaller your sight area and the shallower the depth will show....this maybe over simplified but it was the best way for me to understand. Gary
