The board members here are good for the most part, but nobody is willing to give up "their" hotspots!!! My advice is ask the board in general,I have fished the Bay for over 20 yrs, always for walleye,in every season!! Yes there are spots better than others at times but this is a river like system, the fish always are on the move, for me the farther east you fish on hardwater the better, start at big bay-anywhere 1500 yards or so offshore-18-20ft of water-south shore, then if the ice is safe the mouth of telegraph narrows-SAFETY FIRST- use a spud and a floater suit, then deseronto-also watch the ice here can be good one day and skim the next,Long reach is the next stop, follow the crowds, only stay to the outside edges of them ,too many guys will push the fish out to the sides, all the points if the ice is good are worth checking out,try to stay in 18-26ft of water!!! in feb. the fishing should be hot again this year, the guides out here are a good idea, been out with a few over the years,no bad outtings ,but there are times they are in or near the crowds, stay away from high current areas, the ice is bad,and no fish is worth any life!!! get a good map there are links on the board here-a good start-my own philosophy-pick an area and stay with it,dont be a hole jumper,be on the ice during PRIME HOURS,try fishing different depths in your hole, from bottom to 10ft off bottom -might surprise you!!! Use confidence lures, pick the liveliest minnows in your bucket, switch things up when the action slows-the jumbo perch are fun on light line and small baits,a good flasher or fishfinder is essential !! sharp hooks will equal more fish, pay attention to details, check lines often,a nick could cost you a lunker, have patience, and if you dont succeed --try,try again!!!if we all caught fish every time --it would be called catching not fishing-never give up,just re-think your strategies !!!!i hope this helps out some BOQ newcomers, and if you do get into them good-CONSERVATION-put the big girls back, they support this great fishery!!!remember the limits,ONLY 1 FISH OVER 24.8 INCHS--they don,t taste good that big anyways, keep the smaller fish for table fare, perch are just as tasty if not more so!!50 jumbos is the limit I think, that,ll feed an army of hungary fishermen!!well thats enough for now.Ed-good fishin

As a new comer to the forums and fishing on the BOQ (have yet to do that), thank you for your post. Very good info that can be used by new and seasoned BOQ fishermen. Cheers.

Brand new to the board and fished the bay for the first time earlier this year and one more time since. Haven't been skunked yet but there is alot to learn!!! Thanks for a couple of pointers to help newbs like me find our feet. I still feel alot more confident fishing for steel but I'm starting to like this huntin' for eyes more an more!

Tight lines.

thanks Kevin,it is needed!in my early years late 70s,my dad brought me here to fish a legion derby,i was 14-15yrs old,i fished out of a 12 ft tin boat with a 6hp eska motor, was out of dessie,i really couldnt go far it was june or july, bass derby,so i headed to the bridge,i used a creme crayfish{anybody remember those},well i really pounded the smallies that day, ended up winning the legion derby,BEEN HOOKED SINCE,but when i started fishing walleye i really struggled ,i could have used some good info ,none was ever given,so i persisted, eventually i hit it on the head-in mohawk bay,now I was really hooked, bought a bigger boat 16 ft grumman started venturing farther & farther, started to form patterns in the seasons & locations, meet some guys at work, some had been fishin the bay for years too,we pieced together things, and voila somebody turned on the light!!now the ice season is the HARDEST challenge for the bay, between the decline of the fishery for a while, bad ice for many years, overharvest, alot of ppl really struggled out there if you were not local!!my post is just to give newcomers a fighting chance!!some useful info, not too specific but good general areas and lure choices, also i think the zebras have actually helped the bay, sure the water is alot clearer, and the locations have changed from years gone by,but the population i think is strong ,many good year classes out there,I marked a whole lot of fish this fall, caught my fair share too, probably released between 40-60 8lb plus fish this fall and early winter,15 or so trips .im sure some wont believe the numbers but it is true regardless, some bigger fish were kept, bad hookings,belly-ups on release, etc, point is the fishery is good, strong and vibrant,we have to promote the fishery in order to keep it ,sure there are more boats on your spots, boat launchs fill up early, timmies lines are packed, but the walleye brings alot of money and tourism to the bay area, good fishermen work through these problems and still get impressive numbers, the newbies spend more money per fish then the vets out there, they need some hope and spots to have a real shot at catching a few walleyes, and keep coming back, spending their hard earned money in the bay towns, gas, lodging, bait, food, entertainment,we need the newcomers, ask any business if they like the business of fishin the bay-it equals money in their tills, guides love newcomers,Ed-good fishin-PS i think most fishermen out there are good, honest people, and for the most part stick to the rules and regulations-at least i want to believe they do!!!!

Great post have never ice fished Quinte.Would love to make the trip but I think I would like to try a quiding service first. Would it be to bold to ask for the name and # of a reputable safe guide that could help myself and an older gentleman who can not walk far get out for a day. Also wondering on pricing if anyone has a little input it would be greatly appreciated.
