Quinte Fishing

Hi everyone!

I love fishing at BOQ. I read this forum a lot. But never come across that somebody used tipup for walley fishing in the current.

I've purchased tipup from Lindy. It looks like big tablet with the flag popping up if fish bites.
You can cover ice hole that hole does not freeze. I know it's used typically for pike. But I was thinking how to accomodate it for walley setup. I meant I would like to get your opinion about "bottom" part of setup.
The area where I would start using it in Deseronto. There is some current up there.

I was planing to attach walley rig to the darkon main line. It's the one with 2 metal T-shape wires. They prevent side hooks & minnow to tangle around main line. And 6 lb flurocarbon leader line about 4 inches to the hook. That it will give very natural moves for the minnow.
The rig also comes with 2 golden large hooks with long shaft.

1. So will T-shape wire spook the fish? Alternatively I can attach hooks to main line using bear snap. The line has to be thicker. Like 15 lb flurocarbon leader.

2. Should I use much smaller hooks? And what is the best size would be?

3. I was thinking to keep 2 hooks. 1st about 1/2 to 3/4 of the bottom. 2nd about 1.5 fit from the bottom. Is that right or distance should be different?

4. Drop sinker ( pear shape ) about 1 oz will be at the bottom.

5. Black darkon 30 lb line on the tipup is being snapped into metal wire of the "reel" under water to prevent minnow to unwind the line freely.
Once fish inhales the minnow and swim away. It may feel some resistance when it pulls the line from snap.
How important this circumstance for walley? Should I use "old time wooden" tipup instead? It's more "sensitive".

I have caught eyes on tip ups but not on the bay of quinte, and i have set my tip up a handful of times.

the "pickeral rig" u are describing works well on a windlass tip up (the one that jigs it) where i usually fish for eyes but guides have told me they don't catch here and i am believing them.

i have tried a windlass with a spoon and also a pickeral rig, a polar tip up (the one that covers the hole) with a plain minnow and spilt shot and other combo's(all proven for eyes) and not a single eye ever on the bay.

but u can't catch if it's not in the water, perhaps heavier then 6lb line because u sure would hate to loose a monster and next to that upgrade the hooks to 8's? give it a try and good luck. and the perch action is worth the run, some nice sizes and helps tune the rig to make it sensitive.(go with the stock hooks for that and bring the pliers b4 u run for the flag)

i would think u need a tip up that jigs a spoon and set's the hook on the bay, but spring loaded tip ups are illegal here and windlass don't set.

Tip ups arent worth it on quinte.

I would just dead stick a rod with a 1/4 or 1/8 oz jig head depending on current. Then put a 5+ inch sucker on it. Nothing smaller

Also was suprised why noone is really using it on quinte.

I've caught a lot walleye on tip-ups but haven't tried them at the BOQ. I use a 18# uncoated seven strand wire leader about 36" with a GOOD #6 or #8 treble on one end and a GOOD barrel swivel on the other that i attach to 30# braided nylon. Above the hook a few split shot then hook a minnow of choice just in front of the dorsal fin and set 6" - 18" off bottom. Every 20 min or so simply pick up the tip up a few feet and set it back down....This keeps the minnow moving. Really, the best advise I can give you is to pick up a copy of "Ice Fishing Secrets" published by the In-Fisherman. It's an older book but everything in there still holds true today. last year i caught my biggest eye on a tip up, but yet to connect with one on a tip-up this year

i exclusively use my salted frog heads from summer on my frabil polar tip ups
i jig one hole surrounded by a circle of 5 tip ups. works everytime. never had a day without
75% of my fish hitting the tip ups..people telling you otherwise are just trying to keep
the quinte local secret from outsiders..good luck and tips up.

you are definatley a poacher!!!!!!!!!!! using 5 tip ups when ur allowed to use 2 lines in ontario !!!!!

as for tip ups fish are few and far between on quinte ur bettrr off jigging two rods at once and stagger the depths and baits!!
