Question Re: Catch and Release fishing
I'm a catch and release fisher, if I go out fishing today and release all the fish I catch do I have to stop fishing once I catch my limit?



Answer:
No, there is no limit on the number of fish a person can catch and release in a day provided the season is open and the method of fishing is lawful. If a fish is caught and immediately released at boat-side, or netted and returned to the water as soon as the hooks are removed, it does not count as part of the daily limit as the fish has not been retained.



There is however a limit on the number of fish that a person may catch and retain during the day. If a fish is caught and kept in a live-well, bucket or on a stringer temporarily that fish has been retained and is counted as part of a person's daily limit, even if that fish is later released where a larger fish is caught.



This concept also applies to fish which are caught and eaten or given away; fish which are caught and eaten as part of a shore lunch, or given away are part of the daily catch limit and affect how many fish a person may catch and retain later in the same day.

thats one reason ive never really been in favor of live wells they should all be packed with ice lol culling is for derbys not for fishermen I know that sounds stupid but im sure you know what I mean lol

the culling of walleye is illegal in the states

I don't want to rock the boat too much, but what made me think of this is recently a person on the board someone posted catching a 6lb/7lb/6lb walleye, possibly the 6lb'ers were under 24.8" but I doubt it.

Moto669 the MNR says you cannot help catch your buddy's limit,just ask a friend of mine he gave 1 away to someone,ministry was watching from shore with high power scope,he had his limit of four fish plus the one he gave away made 5,cost him $125.00.

What do you mean by culling of walleye,

Buddy no need to be shy, you can come clean and point a finger at the “person on the board” posting they caught a 6lb/7lb/6lb walleye. Yeah it was me that caught those three fish. I don’t know why I need to explain myself but I don’t like being called out like that n I will explain myself anyway. Of those 3 fish I gave, I gave one each to my dad’s friends. The longest of them was a jack that I kept to practice filleting, a six pounder ( on a spring loaded scale, usually pretty accurate). The seven pounder was just chunky but was shorter then the jack. Anyways long story short I called my father just now up and asked him to measure the jack at the house and it was 24.5” .. which would make the rest under your 24.8" … No disrespect but if you still have any doubts on what a fish under 24.8” looks like you are more then welcome to come over and measure it and weigh it if you’d like…I've caught 8 pounders before that were under 24.7"... And I will stop posting the weights and start posting the length if this is the case. If you have any issues you are more then welcome to PM me. THanks

Like I said, I didn't want to rock the boat...and yes I can measure, know what a 24.8"+ walleye looks like...not gonna say anymore, glad you defended yourself because I wouldnt want anyone gettin in trouble, so congrats on your fish under 24.8" And yes for future I would recommend posting lengths if your gonna post fish in the questionable range if you don't want people to wonder...

My first fish of the season was a 7lb fish that measured 25.1 in. Good food base and trophy genetics mean you will run into fish that weigh alot considering their length. MNR uses length, as it's easiest to determine, but the big pigs have one thing in common. Girth. Big fat bellies. I find a 24 in fish on Quinte to range from 4-7 lbs, but certainly believe they could weigh more.

Where I live on Dog, we catch 4.5 lb bass that may only measure 20 in. long. The owner at a local marina runs a live release derby, and can generally tell if the fish came from Dog (short fat), or on cranberry/whitefish (long lean). If your telling me a fish story I want to know the weight, then how big around that monster was.

Culling I believe, is releasing smaller fish and replacing them with bigger ones. Therefore you never go over your daily catch limit. I think!!!!

ya its a practice in tournaments,to increase weights,legal here,not legal in all states though,in s. ontario-some tournaments have gone to a no cullrules,so if you catch a descent fish you have to decide right away to keep it or release it right away,in hopes of a bigger fish,once its in your livewell you cannot change it out for a larger one.

You have to wonder if these guys knew what can happen if they get caught? MNR officers have more power than any other law officer. I'm sure there's a hefry fine, but they can also confiscate anything you're using to carry out your illegal act - your gear, your sled/atv, hut, car, trailer, dogs, decoys, boat and motor, guns you name it. There was a poacher in Trenton that got caught with poached venison in his freezer and guess what? They took his house! Throw the book at them I say.

This was already mentioned by someone,but here goes anyways.TURN THEM IN!!! There's a hotline # to the ministry and if you don't use it people like this will never learn and the next time they will hide everything over limit and just keep on doing it.Just my rant on this. I am a relatively newcomer to the bay and I feel it to be a privelage to be on the water anywhere at anytime.Abuse is not an option & it is up to everyone of us to protect our sport from poachers & polluters.
