Was just wondering whether any of the members and users of this board plan to submit comments on the Ministry of Natural Resources proposed policy change in controlling the proliferation of double crested cormorants at Presqu'ile Provincial Park. The EBR Resgistry Number is PB04E6007 and available at http://www.ene.gov.on.ca/envregistry/022534ep.htm with written submissions due by April 16th to the Ministry. They are proposing adding shooting as a control technique to the already used removal of tree nests, harassment of adult birds and oiling of ground nests. While Presqu'ile is not quite on the Bay, the birds do fly to the Bay to feed and are now habitating some of the islands there.

(The following was sent to me for posting on the board)

Ladies and Gentlemen fishermen

Kiwanis last Thursday had Rob Pye of Ontario Federation Anglers & Hunters as a guest speaker and he delivered the following messages from the 83,000 members of OFAH.
1. Cormorants have been mismanaged and as a result they are destroying the community of small fishes. These fish are needed in the structure, not only to feed larger fish but they are a necessary part of the aquaculture.
2. Just as bad and perhaps worse, they destroy plants and trees near the water and they are a major source of polution, causing illness, spreading disease, and beaches to close. Without exageragion they put 4,800,000 pounds of raw sewage into our waters during their annual visit to our area.

The Ministry had undertaken stronger measures to control the cormorant, including oiling eggs, and shooting.

This action is great, and it is hoped it is not too late. The Ministry need your supporting letters and faxes to demonstrate they have the support of communities such as yours and ours. The bird needs to be taken off the protected species list.

You can contact them by letter or fax at Ministry of Natural Resources, Ontario Parks Southeastern Zone, 51 Heakes Lane, Kingston Ont, K7M 9B1 or by fax at 613-536-7228.

If you want to have a strong fishery, as a group we can help. If you want to know more about the cormorant simply use the internet, go to our web page www.quinte.com/walleye and there you will find a link to the OFAH.

There is only 33 days left to join our event this year and again all information in on the site. While on the site look into Tackle Share and then see if you have enough tackle lending locations in your area. If you think more are needed contact Rob Pye at the OFAH.

Have a great year, fish with us and enjoy the Spring outing with your families.
