I have a Garmin portable VHF 720. It takes 6 double A batteries which work great until you actually press the mic button and then they die. Does anyone know if the NIHM batteries would work or last longer than the rechargeable NIcad. I have noticed that all the NIHM are 1.2 volt and the radio calls for 1.5. the Nicad were 1.5 but just didnt have the life for a day on the lake.

Thanks

NIMH Batteries are good as they do not build up a memory barrier like NICD but they do not last as long on a charge as a new NICD .
My sugestion if you are willing to spend a little extra cash is to try LITHIUM ION Batteries. They are quite expensive( about $12.00 for 2) but what price do you put on safety.
Just make sure your unit is compatible with Lithium Ion Batteries as not all electronic devices are.

I use nickel metal hydride batteries in my digital camera and am very impressed. They are a lower voltage but will work well. They use their capacity slowly over the course of a day.
I was in toronto at a show and took 45 pictures with the flash every time and was just starting to slow. I swapped the batteries and continued.
I know costco has some rechargeable batteries. I think it was 8 for $25 last time I saw them. January I think.
Hope this helps...Larry

I had the same problem with my digital camera, it used to chew up the best non rechargeables within 50 pictures. Went by cost-co and bought the Sanyo rechargeables, these things have lasted on one charge 30 times longer than any duracell. It was about $25 for the charger and 4 batteries, and bought another pack of 4 aa and 2aaa's for $25.

Batteries are measured in Millibertz (or something like that) and the Sanyo's have the highest rating I have ever seen on rechargeables 2100mbah or something like that. You wont regret it.

they look like these.
I found 2300 and 2100 on ebay, costco has one of them I believe the 2100's.
