question about planer boards

I was wondering if anyone can help me. I want to put a mast on my boat for the planer board ( I prefer it to the inline board) and I don't know how high to make the mast. I figure I could put the mast in the oar lock. Thanks. Just picked up a 14 footer and a 20 merc and am chompin at the bit. Cheers to all,

Basically the higher the better as the mast is used to keep the line off the water and at an angle. I would have it at least 6' or so. I believe the Big Jon planer board mast is around 7'.

Just a small note, when building your own make sure you factor in the amount of force the boards will cause on the mast. Make sure the mast is securely mounted on the boat. The last thing you need is it coming lose and flying back at you.

What are you using for spools to hold the line and bring the board in and out?

I have a home made mast that I used last year but had some problems with the design.

I would be tempted to get two sizes of aluminium pipe and place one inside the other to make it adjustable then you could set it to suit conditions as weather and stability of the boat. With two people aboard it might have less influence on the boat. My mast is about 5' but its mounted about 6' high and just misses the hydro lines when the boats trailered.

I've seen homemade masts that have chain link that has been cut and welded to the mast and the line in wrapped up and down over the open ends of the chain.

Makes it a whole lot simpler.

I also had one made and was going to use the bow seat pedistal mount for the mast, that way it could be removed as required.

Using in-line boards instead, easier to manouver the boat and to take them in and put them out.

I made a mast to fit the front pedestal mount of my 17 foot Crestliner. It took a bit of fine tuning to get the mast to work with the board I made from plans found elsewhere on this site. The mast is over seven feet tall. When it was shorter. the line hit the windscreen. I use an old Mitchell saltwater reel to hold the line and attach it to the aluminum tubing w/ hoseclamps. I will be on the bay out of Picton with the mast up opening day if you want a close look. Tan and black crestliner named Barbara Jean. See you on the water.
