What's the daily limit for the derby??

It is my understanding that you can only enter one fish in the derby per day over the 25 inches. Even though it is a live release derby the Ministry still counts that as a kept fish so therefore you cannot weigh in 2 fish in the same day as it was done a few years ago. Is this still correct or have they changed the ruling??? It would certainly make you think about weighing in a 10 lb fish just after midnight and then you're screwed for the next 24 hours. (I hope I have to deal with that problem).

Dont worry about it, you never catch anything anyway. lol!!

However in the off chance the planets are all lined up for you and a big hawg should bite then I suggest you put it in the livewell until the end of the day then weigh it. Are you up for a beer at Kevins during the weekend??

Interesting question. This came up last year and not sure if we got an answer. Think this might have to go to the MNR.

One thing that is certain. You can only have, in your possession 1 fish over 25' (per person in the boat) at any time. Question is, can you weigh 1 in over 25", release it and than later on the same day bring in another and weigh that in. The real question is when is a fish considered kept cause if you release it than you no longer have a fish in your possession.

I asked this question to a derby official today. He replied by email telling me that by law, you are really only allowed to CATCH one trophy fish per day. That is, if you get one fish over 25" long, you are not allowed to catch another that day. Any one that fishes knows the possession limits, but few realise that this counts for catch limits too. In a nutshell, if you get a big fish, and weigh it, you can't weigh another till the next day. Same goes for culling, once you get a fish, if it goes into the livewell, that is your one trophy of the day. So, unless you're sure that the fish is top ten material, don't weigh it, let it go boatside and you're still legal (at least that's what it sounds like to me) I'm still not 100% sure, but it sounds like once you net a fish and bring it in the boat, it counts towards your daily CATCH limit. My advice, set up a network with freinds that you know that are in the derby. If one person or boat from the group is near a weigh station, find out what size fish it's gonna take to be top ten and get on your cell phone and tell your freinds. You might save your buddie a half hour boat ride for a fish that wouldn't make the leader board.

Really need to figure this out...Bass tourneys are based on culling...You put a fish in the live well and later that day you release it for a bigger one...No different than this Walleye thing...catch-livewell-weighin-release and repeat.

If you believe that you may believe these fish fly. So if I catch a fish, net it and bring it into the boat then it's part of the my possession? So if I went out bass fishing and caught 20 - 30 bass and pulled them in the boat and let them go I would be over my possession. The key to possession is to have it in your possession at any one time. If this fish was to be let go later and not in your possession then how would you be able to count it in you creel limit? Just my opinion. Some of this is subject to the C.O. interpretation as some of you have found out fishing the hard water this year at Sherman's point. :lol:

When you catch a fish you have a reasonable amount of time to decide to keep it or take a picture and release it, once it stays with you any longer it's goes on your possesesion limit, if you let it go later you still possessed that fish on that day so it stays on your limit.

The pro's get away with culling with a wink and a nudge, but it's not legal.

There was a time when the catch and possesion limit was the same, on the bay you could catch 4 walleye and that was it keep em or toss em, and you could watch the pro's poaching every saterday morning on tv. When C+R got promoted they had to rewrite the rules to allow for it.

If you enter 2 fish over 25 on the same day you could be disqualified, banned and charged. If I'm not mistaken you sighn something with an entry, that would leave a paper trail they could use . If you did get away with it if anyone complained they would have no choice but to disqualify you.

Hi Dan,

I am hoping for those planets to align Fri at midnight to catch me a new boat / motor / trailer, another double double header would be nice. I hope you and Kevin don't go out and get skunked again this time. We will be staying in the BIG mansion at Kevins starting Fri afternoon and the beer will be on ice. See y'all then.

It looks like nothing has changed as far as the ruling. The way I am looking at it if I have a fish on board and I catch a bigger one, I'll let the smalller one go and keep the big one. If they want to hassel me on that then they're in for a fight and they better have the fish I just let go. Have a great opening weekend everyone, we'll be at Merland Park, drop by for a cold one. If the fish is live-released that should be the bottom line. NO more questions. That's what the whole point of the law is...to ensure the survival of the larger specimens. Look at bass tournaments....if you have a limit (5) in the livewell at 9am then catch another one that you want to cull at a later time then you put your small one back (that you've had in the livewell since before 9am) and keep the larger one that you just caught for weigh in. It doesn't seem that there is any question about keeping a fish in your posession for a period of time then releasing it when a bigger one is caught.

Same difference for the derby; weighing in more than one big walleye in a day...except if you weigh it right away rather than keeping it in the livewell all day that's one heck of a lot less stress that fish endures god knowing all the guys that fish the derby don't have the best livewell/aeration systems. You should be fine weighing more than one over 25" in a day due to it's immediate release.....we won't mention the 7' nose-dive release tactics employed by the picton station I witnessed last year though...

I plan on phoning the weigh in station if/when i catch a big one, if it isn't in the top 5 i will release her, I plan on doing that for both days, if the weigh in station gets enough phone calls they might alter the rules a bit to suit the angler. I am all for C&R but these rules seem to really limit you, I preferred it the way it was a few years back.

That is a good idea if the weigh station has a phone number you can call in and check weights. If anyone has the number please post. I agree who wants to keep a walleye if they know it has no chance of winning anything yet is over the 25" in length.

I have tried to ask the Co-ord for the number. Let's do some math. ~5000 tickets sold. I can see the problem of 1000 anglers calling in every 1/2 hour asking for the board totals. Everyone with me on this? :lol:

They would lose the profits just hiring operators to answer the phones , not to mention the dead ares for the cell around Rams Island or how about the guy bringing the 10lb and it's at 12lbs already on the board and he gives them @$#3 because he phoned earlier and the weight was lower. Oh the problems we weave. I'm not fishing for an argument hehehe :oops:

how about vhf marine radio?
If the weigh ins have a radio and all are on the same channel it would only take a "broadcast " every so often and folks would know.
