Hey guys I'm in desperate need of some help with my wooden lure making. I used to make muskie lures years ago and have started doing it again. I have two questions: what should I use for a clear coat and how in the world can I glue a plexy glass lip into a wooden lure??? I have tryed so many adhesives and nothing will bond to the plexy glass. It's driving me nuts! I have two nails that run through the lip so I'm not worried about it falling out and the eyelets and main eye are all connected with a through wire. I just need something waterproof that will seal the lip in the wood.
As for the clear coat I have read that people use Envirotex, automotive clearcoat, epoxies, spar varnish. But with so many options I can't figure out what is best. For my deep diving baits I will need a lighter finish so as to not damper action. I know we all like a nice hard shiny finish on our Muskie baits but I don't know what is used to get that result. Eitherway I need to use some kind of finish that will obviously somewhat stand up to teeth.
If anyone has any advice I would much appreciate it!
Thanks!

i don't know if I'm any help but, when i would try to make my own flies i use clear nail polish on the threads as the glue. it will seal the wood and you can reapply later on easily if needed. about your lip problem why not carve the lip directly into the lure when you make it? i know nothing about making lures but i hope i could help.

Paul thanks for the info! So the 5 min epoxy actually bonds to the plexy glass?? And where can I buy the tremclad?? Have you ever tryed any other clear coats? And do I need a drying spin rack?
Thank you very much again!

CA glue (aka crazy glue). I make loads of wooden turned lures. Other than making them look good for selling to customers just turn, spray, add hooks and lips. I have found 0 difference between clear coat or not The fish go for action and colour.

You can buy tremclad clear coat at CT and TSC and yes I find the epoxy does bond to the plexi glass I have a minnow style lure I made 11 years ago the lip is still attached ,and has caught many fish.

Try screwing the plex in place (countersink them a little and fill with Bondo ) as for finish envirotex or slow cure epoxy works great. Make a lure turner out of a rotisserie motor, let turn over night and you will be happy! Sometimes I use aluminum for the lips as well.

have you tried polyurithain they now sell it in a spray can what would probably be better would be spar varnish it is made for outside usage doubt it comes in a spray can but im sure you can run it thru an air brush cup , just a thought and they should come in clear semi gloss or high gloss
