Changing Gear Oil

Hi All,

I had so much fun last night attempting to change the lower gear oil in my 40 HP Evinrude.

I didn't have a pump because I was under the impression that I could simply squeeze the oil from the tubes. This was not the case. My problem I believe is that the bottom hole where you drain and fill the oil is too small for the tubes I have. The tubes are threaded so I assume on a bigger outboard you could simple thread the tube in the hole and squeeze out the oil. I tried just holding the tube in there as tight as I could but it still was pretty messy.

The question I have is if I buy a pump, are there difference size adaptors to accommidate the smaller hole?

Anyone have any tricks they used other than using a pump?

Either way I didn't have enough (2 tubes 8 oz [227 ml]) gear oil so I have to go to the marina and gets some.

Hi Mike

I found an inexpensive pump at Canadian Tire. I beleive its made by Lubromatic. Its less than $20. It works great on my Johnson kicker and my 150 merc. I found that the threaded end is universal on all motors.

Hi Mike,

not all holes are the same size. I was lucky when I bought my gear oil that they gave me a couple of screw on tapered nozzles as my pump fit my 60 Johnson but was too big for my 5 hp Mariner and I had already drained all of the lower unit oil out and my first snip of the nozzle made it too big. Lucky for the second one! In any case, if you purchase your oil from a marina they should give you the nozzles when buying your oil....just make sure you cut a little at a time! The best bet is give the marina the make and model of your motor and they'll give you the right size pump fitting. Good luck this weekend!

Got her figure out last night...No pump...just the tubes...Made a mess but what else is new...Had the out board purring in the drive way.

Mike next time you can buy the lube in 500ml bottles and with the pump attached it is a very clean operation....Larry

I use the pump with Syntec Castrol oil and it's the same fitting for my 15 hp, 25 hp and my I/O Mercruiser Alpha One. With the pump there is no mess and it can be done in a matter of minutes. Don't forget to change the little washer if you don't want any water to get in.
