Was out on Sat AM with Perfectly Pat and headed off to Shermans in the threatening conditions, rain suits in case. The weather from the northeast brought showers and mist. That seemed to trun the walleyes off as we only hit a small pair up there. Glad we brought the rainsuits.

Took a look over Grandfather Cove way and marked a lot of fish in some of the deeper water over that way.

Was out again on Sat PM with Hay Bay Larry, starting at Thompson Cove(for want of a better description of the area, that is east of Thompsons Pt and west of Winslow Pt.) HBL hit a nice 18" on a silver RedSwan Swing blade spinner. Headed over to Mallory bay and he hit another 18" and a couple of sheepshead on the same lure.

His blades were working better than the Uzick Spinner.

On our way bay we stopped at the weedline near the south shore ramp and I hit a 17" on a red Uzick spinner.

Sunday found me alone at the south shore ramp weed line and the weather had changed ane the bite was on again. My totals for the five hours was eight walleyes with the biggest at 20". Gave some Uzick spinners to a couple and on their first pass he hit a 22" walleye, he was pleased.

Went out Sunday PM for a look at some favourite haunts and BOY have things changed. The weedbeds that I've fished for the last three-four years have virtually disappeared.

Does anyone know why this would happen? I thought they would stay and grow every year - doesn't appear to be the case, these were some LARGE weedbed on Hay Bay North and Hay Bay South.

Didn't get any fish but saw some 13 foot schools of baitfish, surrounded and very large marks, not too far from Ram Is in 29 feet of water.

Will be back out next weekend with some young fishers, trying to get their first walleyes. stay tuned

One of the ways a weedbed get lost is due to ice forming in the weeds. Then if the ice gets broken up and blown away before melting it rips the weeds out by the roots.
I look for and read your great reports daily. Then go out fishing for a few hours in our local PA lakes and come back skunked again. I really envy you guys that have the opportunity to even fish in Hay Bay. Gotta be next to heaven !
By the way, I got 2 walleyes in PA this year. I got 3 FOR THE YEAR last year so I still have a chance to beat that.

Wow Kenbo ! I read this at 11:15pm and was half asleep. What a wake-up! Now I'm not sure I will even sleep tonight. I didn't think there were that many walleyes in PA. I obviously need all the help I can get. I'm easily coached. I am beggn' on the beg-n-brag board. Please help. How can I catch #3 ? I am at johnglo@ptd.net

Superdad,
Thanks for the report. I'm coming up this long weekend with a few young kids. Too many in the boat to troll or cast safety. How effective would verticle jigging be with live bait, minnows and leaches, along the weed edge? Thanks again.

Greg,

Weedlines with spinners and worms or crankbaits(should work also) would be the way.

Jigs and plastic casting into the weeds might be an idea also, tough fishing that way.

I'll be out with some young people on Sat AM, Look for a Springbok with 'Mercury' decals on the side - That's me.

Say HI.

I found the same thing happening in the Kawarthas. Weedbeds change from year to year but the real gems are usually consistent. In my experience the most consistent have some form of runoff that fertilizes them eg. farm runoff or lawn fertilizer runoff. There must be good weedlines out from waterfront farms on the BOQ?

I fish the kawartha`s alot and sometimes this is what happens to the weeds after some off the summer. As the plants grow and get tall zebra mussels attach themselves to the base(root) of the weed which makes the root heavy. Then when you get a fairly strong wind it breaks the weed and voila you have all those floating weeds that wash up on shore.
I noticed some of my spring bass spots were now weedless. Was on the bay Thurs. and caught 2 smallies 5 largemouth and 2 nice eyes 20 and 21 inches both released.
