Quinte Fishing

Hi everyone, I've been lurking here a long time but have had few posts, I am hoping somebody can help me out.

I have a 2004 Honda 9.9HP on my 14' aluminum and the motor is missing, both in gear and in neutral. The miss is inconsistent and sometimes I can run fine for a few minutes followed by the missing that often causes the engine to stall.

At first I thought it was bad gas, so I changed the fuel filter and got new premium gas. That didn't help so I replaced the carburetor with a new one (rather than rebuild). The boat is still missing.

I thought that maybe the overheat protection was causing the missing, the water stream was warmer than normal. Well the water pressure was good so I removed the thermostat and bench tested it. The thermostat was fine.

Any suggestions?

As part of my spring tune up I changed the gear oil, crankcase oil, and replaced the spark plugs. I've checked the plugs they look normal and are both getting a spark. The primer bulb is also fine, it is staying hard throughout the missing.

I am out of ideas and am considering bringing the motor into a shop. Who do you recommend to work on Honda's in the Kingston area?

You say that you changed your plugs. Was it missing before you changed them ? First off i know you said you put new plugs in but i would try another set. I have had many new plugs that would fire out of the cylinder but would not fire or miss fire under compression. Check this first and let me know how you make out. Fred...

where did you buy your motor? i have a 9.9 honda kicker and had problems in the begining 2 years turned out the carb was not set up properly then stail gas gummed it up. Took it to JP marine and now it works like a top for the last 2 seasons and this season.
If you go there the place looks like its in shambles but he is very very good.

Try a buddy's fuel tank and fuel line. This will eliminate the questions around fuel, and if its the cause......its a cheap fix.

@Fred I replaced the plugs as part of my spring tune up. The motor ran fine for a while with the new plugs before the missing developed. The motor was running fine on the old plugs before so I tried putting them back in and nothing changed.

@apmikel I bought the motor used with low hours (that is what the seller said) on it. This is my second season on the motor and up until now it has run perfectly. I think the motor is originally from Ward's

@Matt I am certain that it isn't a fuel problem. I have cleaned the tank, purged the line, replaced the fuel filter, and gotten new fuel. The only thing would be if the line itself is letting air in but I don't see any bubbles going through the filter and the primer bulb doesn't go soft so I don't think that is the problem.

Thanks again for your replies, I will keep JP's and Ward's in mind if I end up going to a shop.

I tested the motor today for over an hour and it is running like a top again.

I checked every electrical connection, disconnecting cleaning and re-assembling with dielectric grease.

I got new spark plugs. The first set I gapped at the minimum recommendation (0.031"). I gapped the other set slightly more than the max recommendation (0.035"). The motor ran best on the larger gapped plugs.

Thanks for all of your advice. I feel like a goof because it was probably just a bad set of plugs, oh well back to the important stuff - fishing!

I would verify that the tiny 'o' ring in the fuel line is OK.........

That has caused MANY MANY problems in the past.
