Quinte Fishing

I was fishing a tournament on sunday, had a bunch of rods spooled up with either seaguar invizx or p-line floro clear (about a 50-50 slip), these have been getting some use, not a ton, there were all spooled up less then 3 weeks ago.. anyways.. test is 12 pound....

First fish i get it to the boat, its probly a 13-14 inch fish, so i go to lift it into the boat, line snaps. lose my lure and fish..

second fish, this was a good one, about 3 pounds, i set the rod down, go to grab the fish my hand slides off its mouth, it runs down, line break, of with luire again. i double checked all my guides and drags at this point in time.. on the 6 rods i set up with floro. i did find one bad guide on a rod i hadnt used and put it away..

fish number 3 was a nice smallie on a drop shot rig, fish jumped, line broke....

i found the fish i was catching on braid were tiny compared to the fish i lost on floro.. it had stormed hard sat night, till 6am. ..

i will be cutting the line off all 6 rods, so i am looking for some advice to what to use..
how often do you respool florocarbon, my buddy told me he puts new line on all his rods before every tournament day... i was never in contention to win, but had i got the fish i lost into the live well, it wouldnt of been such a imbarresing day.... i had used these rods/line in the u.s.a opener i did well in, with not issues..

was it breaking at the knots ?

How many times do you check and re-tie? For me, i re-tie a single rod 10-15 times a day. So far this year no break-offs but I have broke two hooks (trokar) in half!........which speaks to the quality of line, knots and the importance of re-tying.

not knot breaks, 2 of the 3 were at the reel. i had to open bail and re thread all the guides.
i tie trilene knots.. palomar knots for braid, a palomar knot will slip on florocarbon...
10 -15 times aday ??? wow, yea that doesnt work into my style of fishing. i am power cranker, i will take a fair sized lake like charlston, and fish the hole thing in 8 hours.. spending more time on good spots, and going over not so good spots quickly. normaly it works for me very well, yesturday it worked but i let my self down... will carry a net again..

i have been hearing a lot of good things about the berkly 100% floro...
what knot are you tieing on it ?? so your retieing like every 20 casts ?? or when it looks bad ?? and how much like are you cutting off ?? i do retie, but i check my line every 2 or 3 casts and tie as often as i think it looks questionable, i cut 2-3 feet of line off when i retie.

I run flourcarbon leaders, about ten feet, fishing senkos wacky style...i have caught probably 40 fish, small and largemouth in the last two weekends...never changed line, no breakoffs...using palomor knot...searguard flour, 15# test

Everyone is different, for me, whenever there is a break - between docks, spots, idling out, after a toothy.....

Palomar 100% of the time, it only takes 20 seconds.

no problems with the knots slipping ?? (using palomar knots) first time i ever used floro i tied a palomer knot and had it slip, on a good sized fish. ( i think thats what mattdbz was hinting at)
you get pike into the boat on floro ??? its allways been a instant line break for me.. i am going to go get a spool of the berkley 100% floro tonight after work, and get it ready for wensday when i go smallie fishing out on the big lake.

I lucked out and got some 12 lb orvis floro trout line and spooled a bass rod and one walleye rod with it, also spooled my ice reels up with it. It's the best line I have ever used but it's crazy expensive, I lucked out and got 1200 ft for free.

Yep, save yourself some cash and go with a mono mainline and add fluoro leader of about 10 feet. But don't buy junk fluoro from the mono manufacturers who've just jumped into the flouro game. I only use Seaguar across the board...steelheading at 3 lb. test all the way through walleye, bass, pike to my open water salmon trolling at 30 lb. test. The whole spectrum of line strengths are just excellent. I'm a huge fan of Trilene Sensation for my mono money. I've used just about every mono out there. Sensation is super strong, limp with great abrasion resistance.

How often do you respool floro or change the leader ??
my wife respools before every tournament, but thought it was over kill, she said she does it due to uv damage and memory, also thinks fresh stuff is more sensitive..
when i read online, i find alot of guys that have issues with it snapping like crazy like i am, after a few weeks use... wish i would of done more research on this..

I stick with Berkley floro. Tried Vanish and it broke instantly on every descent size fish. Vicious is junk too. You can't go cheap on floro. You get what you pay for.

I don't do a lot of casting so take my answer with a grain of salt, however, I'm a big fan of braid with seaguar leadermaker flourocarbon tippet. The tippet can be longer or shorter depending on the application but this has worked really well for me.

I would look closely at your guides and spools again to make sure there is no bur that is nicking the line. Take a fine steel wool and just buff the guides to make sure there is nothing there. You will feel it catch if you go slow and light through the guide the first time when there is a burr.

Just my two cents but I have had brutal luck with flourocarbon main line. I find it has way to much memory for my liking.

I had the same problem (break offs)with Vanish, and found I ran into problems when using any floro as a main line (memory)on spinning gear. Switched to a Seaguar floro leader and it works great. Make sure whatever brand you get that it specifies "leader material" as its much stronger and more abrasion resistant.

Agree with Dog Lake on floro as a main line. (memory) although I use Vanish as my leader. Braided line with floro leader for me. Double uni-knot on the splice, and usually palomar knot on the hook. Same application for trolling, casting, drop shot etc.

Fireball, which rod are you using? When I made the switch to using Sufix Castable 100% Fluorocarbon on a Medium weight baitcasting rod, my hook up and landing percentage increased significantly. When casting crankbaits that have a lighter wire treble hook as opposed to a heavy wire worm hook, something has to give. The 12% approximate stretch that fluorocarbon gives along with the medium weight rod sticks the fish without pulling the hooks out or bending the hooks. When I used to use braid with a fluoro leader I would often get breakoffs especially on big smallies hitting like a freight train. I think that the zero stretch of braid forced the stretch to take place in just the short span of the leader whereas using the fluoro as a main line allows the stretch to take place over the entire distance from your reel to your bait. I still have many applications where I use braid with a fluoro leader, but I am completely a believer that when casting cranks a softer rod and Sufix Castable 100% fluorocarbon is the ticket. I use it in 12lb for bass and check it constantly for nicks and weak spots from abrasion. It holds up very well, but if I see or feel a spot, I will strip off some line and retie. Again as Matt mentioned, I use the Palomar knot and the knot has never slipped. Make sure that you wet it with saliva before tightening down the knot so that you don't burn the line. Most fluorocarbon lines that I have tried to spool up in the past (not as leaders, but full spool) have held way too much memory and just want to jump off of the spool, but I have been extremely impressed with this line’s suppleness and castability as well as its consistency in quality throught the spool. Give it a shot and let us know what you think.
