Fished the River by myself very early this morning. Caught 7 walleyes. Two 28', 20", 19", and three just under 18". I also caught some smallmouths and kept an 18" and a 16". I was back at the launch by 8:00 am.

Caught most before sun rise in 8-25 fow on various crank baits trolled into strong current. Cranks need to get close to bottom without getting fouled to much. Bright or glow colors at night and more natural during the day. I simply long line the cranks using rod holders and watch rod tip to make sure lures are working. Side planners are tough to use. Fish move shallower at night and drop deeper during the day. You can see their eyes glowing with a spotlight. After the sun rises I fish very heavy (10-12 once) home made bottom bouncers with stick baits using heavy gear and heavy braid or heavy jigging spoons (1-2 oz.). Down riggers can work ( I've caught some)but constantly changing depths make them difficult to use. Fish are often 30-70' or more. The current makes for difficult fishing and you need to know the water and have a good graph and GPS helps to keep you on the fish. Often I'm basically slip trolling into the current and barely making headway up river. Fish move up on shoals where the the current is fairly strong. Can't be too much current for them. Often they are on heads or sides of shoals and islands with deep water nearby.
There are plenty of walleyes out there but most people aren't willing to fish at night on the River as you need to know the water. When they are deeper during the day fishing techniques makes for tough fishing. I've caught them anchored casting sticks and cranks at night and on jigs and even on worm harness but trolling is the most effective method for me. When fishing deep I often run a deep diving crank which can pick up suspended fish.
