Well i got out to the Bonnet last night with my son. He borrowed a couple of saltwater rods from his boss and i rigged up a couple of dipsys that were apparently too small with dodgers spoons likely with the wrong distance between. We stopped in at tThe Reel Thing before we headed out. The people there are awesome I will certainly be spending money there. . We stuck to the shallower 80-100 ft range around the island hoping we were getting to 40-50 with our setup. We were marking fish and bait in that range in several locations. We apparenty scrubbed bottom at some point and tripped the dipsy's so who knows how long we trolled with no depth. My boat will only troll down to 3-3.5 mph too which likely didn't help matters any. I'm thinking of getting something so i can slow the troll more but I don't want to drill holes in my boat or outdrive.

We didn't catch anything there so we decided to hit West Lake for some Bass which is more in my comfort zone. We worked a week bed there for a hour and caught 6 Large Mouth in a hour. That was my first trip to West Lake too.

Is there any websites I can see typical salmon / trout setups to get an idea how to rig properly / what knots to use etc? I'm thinking of getting a couple dipsy rods but do I want to run lead core or mono? I cant put downriggers on my boat so I was thinking of using Torpedo Divers. Any and all advice is appreciated.

I was out at the bonnet yesterday too
Did better on rainbows getting 4 and 2 salmon
Nothing too big but the biggest rainbow
Gave an Awesome show leaping 2 feet out of the water
With 200 ft of line out still. Just a big silver flash
To see.
I fished 160/175 ft south part of the bonnet
Wonderbread spoons matched with the wonderbread deeper diver
For most of the fish and the larger of the salmon
On green spinny and fly

4 and 2? Lbs? Are you using Dipsy's or riggers? I saw boats south but I wasnt able to fish deep anyways so I didn't want to be the newb in everyones way for no good reason. Thanks for the info. All these little bits are adding up in my head lol. I didn't realize how much I didn't know.

I was using dipsys and riggers
But all of my fish have been on dipsys this year
I have the 107mm one on braid the other on wire
You can get pretty deep with them
The chart said i should be around 50 ft deep
I hear your pain on the budget
But ive been slowly adding one piece at a time
Trying to hide each new rod from the mrs.
Dipsys are also 100 times better for fleas i find they are getting thick out there
Good luck

Best resource on the web for Great Lakes Salmon Fishing, especially Lake O bar none is www.spoonpullers.com. More information than you can possibly absorb in one sitting...maybe a few months...members are a great bunch, very open and helpful with advice but there is a ton you can research on your own...check out the different categories and you'll see...
