Good morning . I just spent the week at sherkston resort in lake erie . Unfortunately I did not get out fishing much as the wind was relentless . I did manage a 7lb eye in 50 ft of water using dipsys using a rather large spinner worm harness bought from the local tackle shop . I will try to post a pic when i get unpacked .

My question is can you fish lake ontario ( not the bay) both east and west of the county for walleye ? If so what depth should I start and what area i.e . Bonnet . I know this area is hot for salmon but I wonder if its worth while targeting walleye .

Any thoughts

Look for shoals and islands surrounded by deeper water. The deeper water provides security and temp while the shallower is essential for forage. If you look at some mapping you will find these areas known to hold summer big lake eyes

The Bonnet can be an excellent place for monster eyes later in the season. bit too early yet.

Like Landshark says about deep water and structure. The Bonnet is the best lake O has to offer. The eyes out there move a lot. Grizz & I will be targeting them in a month or so.
Will give all a heads up when we start producing.

Al

you know what i find interesting...

the walleye in east end of lake ontario are caught on or near the shoals with access to deep water, exactly as shark mentioned...

however, on erie, they are not.

they are caught well off the "bass shoals" in water so far from any structure.....often 5 miles or so from any structure...

interesting how different the walleye act in two great lakes next to one another.

i'm quite sure water temps must have something to do with this.

Yes the locals told me that any water deeper then 50ft will hold walleye on erie but the prime depth is 100ft using dipsys for larger eyes . These fish are usually suspended . I caught mine not far from a shoal . My sonar was blank untill I got close to where the water should have gotten shallower . Bait balls were showing up on the screen followed by other fish .

I guess the same tactics could be used in Lake O . Thats good to hear that the Bonnet holds eyes I would like to try it . Something about that open water and the possibility of catching larger fish .

The Bonnet and eyes that sounds good.

I'm heading to the London area on Monday for a week with the kids to visit my family, I'm hauling the boat down so hopefully a bit of Lake Erie walleye fishing will be in the cards. We usually do well trolling spoons or "old school" Ripplin' Redfins on 10 colour core or dipseys.

thanks charlie, I regularly check the long point site. I have had very good success past years. We will probably fish from Port Glasgow, relatively close to my parents place.

I have understood that some folks have caught walleye at 80-100 ft or a bit more closer to the mainland than the bonnet. Landshark had it correct in his summary.

Yes, true Napanee, but the majority of eyes are suspended over the shoals. I have caught them on all sides of Nicholson Island, but the best fishing that I have experienced is at the Bonnet Island. I have caught them on Wicked Bank at Salmon Pt.
and in 30 fow off Wellington. Also caught them around McFaul's & Palen Bank. In late September & October they are all over the area.
