thanks, i'll be targetting eyes in the bay later this fall, never had much luck with planers, but it is a very new technique for me as well and it seems to be the ticket!

My new boat came with a planer board mast set-up...any thoughts on them? I have always thought they may be a little better, although when the line unclips there is a brief period of slack line, is that why they are favored less? I tried them this summer while pike fishing and they worked quite well, any thoughts on them?

Awesome tips guys!! By the way Sheldon, do you stiil use the clip at the end of the board, or just the two on the arm?? Also, will it still work if you use the hole at the end of the arm, or do have to drill a new hole in the centre??

It has a bend in it!!!

You can use the mast, some do. slack is a disadvantage and so is turn radius

i use the canadian tire type, and when i get a fish on,the board slides down to the leader, and dives and i have to fight the board and usually lose the fish am i doing something wrong?

Pin the board, don't let it slide down the line this way you should be bale to keep it planning as you reel the walleye in. You need a nice steady retrieve with now rod pumping to keep the board on a straight trajectory towards the boat. Once you get within a rod length of the boat you can lift the board out of the water by raising the rod tip and then remove the board from the line. Then fight the fish the rest of the way to the boat. Now keep in mind you need your boat moving forward this whole time to keep everything under tension.

One last tip, you may need to replace the clips on the boards you purchased, as they may be designed to release from the line and slide.

I use offshores with the orange clip (very strong spring), use 40# braid to reduce pad cutting and the red with holes clip on the rear. 40 ft 12# floro leader. Board does not always release if the line is all the way in. Pads are cheap to buy/replace. (with and without holes). Black clips are then drilled and pinned with small rivets and used on the rear or for drop weights. Good hookups!
