I want to get a couple of copper setups before next years season. I'd love some input on what works for you guys. I'm thinking 500 to 600' of copper to get deep as I don't have riggers.

Hey man, got to www.spoonpullers.com
You'll have to register to see any posts but this is an amazing site for anything related to big water trolling.
There are different sub-sections for all set ups including copper

Nice. I would rather spend my money here though. I guess I could get someone here to order the stuff in. Thanks for the links!

i use the daiwa saltist 55 for my 300' section of copper instead of the tekota 700lc.

that is because the tekota 700's and 800's have poor(er) drags. much different than their 300, 500, and 600 series drags.

however, on my 400' section of copper, i do use a tekota 800lc.....i'm getting the drag changed on that reel to a "tuna tom" drag from 'pullers.

hope this helps.

oh ya, i use the shimano telora 8' copper rods.

I would buy there as well if i were you but stay away from the junk linecounters and poor placement of the diawa saltists

rtkman, I'll give you all the info on the copper dos and don't. During some tournaments, we will run up to 6 copper rods. Been running copper for 5 years. Steve is correct about the drags on the older Tekotas. We have not had any problems with the new ones.
You do not necessarily need line counters, I prefer not to use them even though they are on the reels. I use shrink wrap that is sold by Tom Allen of A-Tom-MIK. The shrink marks every 50' & 100' sections. I have seen 800 tekotas out as much as 80' on a 400' section.

PM sent.
Al

Thanks for the info. so you measure out every 50 ft and put shrink wrap on it? Or do you buy it already done? I guess it its marked every 50 ft you dont need line counters.. Can you replace your own drags if you are handy or do you have to send them away? I'd love to upgrade the drags on my Okuma's. I wish i'd bought convectors instead of mags...

I start at the 100' mark and then do every 50'. At 200' 2 short pieces of shrink wrap, 1 piece at 250', 3 short pieces at 300' and so on. This method is deadly acurate for depth. Line counters not so much. Like I said you can be out 80' at 400 on the counter.

The biggest mistake anglers make is that they do not back the star drags off on their reels when not in use. The drag on my old Tekota 800 is still perfect.

I could but I don't do the drags myself. I am sending my old diawa 47LCs away to be rebuilt this winter. One of them is 22 years old and the drag is definitely worn out. I use them strickly for wire now and they take a beating.

Later
Al

Good info thanks Al. How do you know you have 100ft out to start marking? How are you measuring it? Going to back off my drags now.
