I have a 1970 60 hp Johnson that I am trying to get working. The problem is that I can not get the starter to work. When I turn the key the starter spins but the bendix will not engage. I have changed the solenoid and the starter off of my spare motor that did start. Not sure what I missed any thoughts would help.
Thanks John

Does your battery have enough juice is the ground good, usually that is caused by motor starter not spinning quick enough to throw the gear up into the fly wheel need replacing. "Or" can you spin the flywheel by hand? if not than you got a compression lock and need to spin that fly wheel by hand to get out of it will need a good size wrench.

^^^^ If the gear on the starter is not coming up to engage the flywheel, but is spinning, the most likely problems are low voltage (battery or loose wire) or the bendex spring needs replacing. I'd make sure all the connections are tight and put a fresh battery on it. If that is not it you probably need a new spring. Good Luck.

Chances are that if this motor has been sitting you starter drive is somewhat seized on the starter shaft. If your starter is spinning good it should throw the starter drive into the ring gear. Take the starter off and remove the starter drive. Clean the starter shaft with some scotch bright and lube it with some white lithium grease. It should travel freely when done.

I would suggest you start by ensuring the battery is fully charged.
Remove, disassemble and clean old grease from internal components and regrease with a lithium grease.
Check all of the wiring to the starter back to the battery for corrosion or breakage and that ground seated well.
*****Do not attempt if you are not familiar with this process******
With the starter on a work bench and secured, connect a set of booster cables directly from battery source to determine if the bendix engages as it should. (referred to as a bench test) (if it doesn't you most likely will be looking at a rebuild)
Also, Some may suggest tapping the starter with a small hammer to "shock" the starter; the internal components can be damaged permanently if you are too persuasive, not recommended, $$$
Reattach and you should be good to go.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info guys I think that is is sounding like a spring issue. I will start with the cleaning and re-grease. The starter was working last week so hopefully that is all it needs.
Thanks John

I had a similar problem till one day I was in the middle of the lake and got nothing. I switched to my deep cycle battery and it started right up. Bought a new battery and never had the problem again.
