I/O's late in the season

I'm usually done fishing by now and my boat would be winterized long ago but I'm fishing as long as I can this year. How late do you other inboard guys push it? I have a small lamp in my engine compartment now to keep it warm. Any tips?

rtkman, Dec 4th last year and hopefully the same this year.

From now on, I drain the block & manifolds when I get home in the driveway. Lower the outdrive down and bump the engine over 4 or 5 times in a 15 minute period. This will drain the excess water out of the outdrive water pump. I used a heater under the block until one year someone accidently knocked the extention cord out of the wall socket. Not anymore, I was lucky.

Now I am a technician and understand the operation of the cooling system, etc.
Same with the kicker, it self drains but I still bump it over a few times so the water will bleed down.

When I know it is the last time out, I put the stabilizer to it and fog the engines (sometimes) when I get home and then again completely drain every thing. I never winterize because the boat will be back in the water the end of march.

The last 2 or 3 trips I fill with high test. I change the oil and service both engines in the spring.

Works for me.

Thanks Al maybe I'll do the same and keep my little lamp going too. I will run antifreeze in and fog too when I'm done. I usually fill the tank and run stabilizer as well.

Good info TMan. I have an outboard, but I pretty much do the same. I don't change the oil till spring, but I empty the lower unit in the fall, at storage time. I put stabilizer in a full tank of gas, and crank it a few times to run it through the motor, while also spitting out any extra water. I've only fogged a couple times LOL, not sure if you really need to????

Yes after the last trip I do pull the intake hose of the engine a dump RV antifrreze in.

Yes and I forgot to mention if it is not snowing too hard I cracked outdrive loose and drain any water in the belows. Also drain the lower units.

It is a sad day in December when I have to do that.

I have a 5 gallon pail with a hose on it that I attach to the earmuffs and suck water through the drive / engine (after warming it up so the thermostat is open) Then disconnect the hoses off the engine. This way I can draw in lots of antifreeze and make sure it gets everywhere in the system.

Changing the oil in the fall is a good idea. There are deposits that build up from the combustion process that can cause rust issues in the engine. Changing it in the fall takes care of any potential issues this way.

That's what I do. But the other side of the debate is by the time you actually use the boat again the oil is old I guess.
