Well as Christmas is fast approaching I figure I should send my Christmas List to the big jolly fellow before it is too late.

I am hoping to do more salmon and trout fishing with the new boat in 2012, so I am looking to add a new rod/reel combo or two, to my arsenal.

Just looking for suggestions on what to add.

I currently have several downrigger combos (mono), a couple braid dipsey combos, a 10 colour and a 5 colour core.

I was thinking either a copper or wire dipsey setup.

Any thoughts from anyone?

JimW

I'd do the Copper. Its more money :) The wire is easy you could do it with your braid combos just add a twilli or roller tip. I'm planning a couple copper setups before spring myself.

I'd have to vote wire too.

I run Okuma all great lakes rods with all stainless guides. Add a torpedo twily tip.

Clarion 30 takes 1000' of 30lb 19 strand wire.

Just thought I'd add another option.

Tekota 800, Telora 10' wire rod and 400' of copper you did say your trying to target Salmon in 2012 that's what will get more fish in the boat no matter what mode they are in and fishing out in the deep 400' gets you nice and deep 80' or so and positive electro field copper releases will help you get more fish in the boat at the end of the day SWEET!!

Like most have stated, get the wire. Copper has it's place but wire is so much more fun and versatile.

I would get the wire first. It can be used in more situations.
Running your leadcore of the riggers or with Torpedo divers will give you similar action as the copper.
Until you can afford the copper that is..

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Looks like I will get 2 wire setups first then add some copper setups.

Do you attach the wire directly to the reel spool?

well jim, i think that depends on which reel you go with...

the reels i use, shimano tekota's, have a pin built into the spool that you can connect the wire to, and just start reeling....

with a tekota 600, you can fit the entire 1000' of wire on it.

HOWEVER, and this is key, whether you spool it on, or a store does, when you get to the water, tie on the biggest weight you own (i use 5 ounce keel weights) go deep, let the entire thing out, and reel it all on back again....

that way she is nice and tight on the spool....

also, never ever let the "end" of the wire to slip back into the spool.....you don't want your wire cross threaded with the line guide....that'll cause massive problems....

finally, don't break down your wire rods....or if you do, put a pool noodle or something in the break, so the wire does not kink where the rod is broken down....

once i put the wire on the tekota, i tie a big spro or stringese swivel on, and never break it down...that way my wire doesn't kink, and most importantly, my wire end doesn't get drawn into the spool, past the line guide.....if that happends, you have to let it all out again, and reel it all back again....

my first year fishing wire i almost threw my rod in the water after 3 breaks in a row on the initial hit....but it was because of the way i was treating my wire (mainly letting it kink) .....

keep your wire clean, and it wont break....

btw, i still have my same two wire dipsy reels since 2004. Same reels, same wire....no issues.

the drags on the tekota's are starting to go...but thats after 7 seasons of very heavy use.....

Wire for sure.....unless you are young and are a sadist then you should go with copper. Wire dipsey's have easily out produced copper for me and is much more exciting.
