well jim, i think that depends on which reel you go with...
the reels i use, shimano tekota's, have a pin built into the spool that you can connect the wire to, and just start reeling....
with a tekota 600, you can fit the entire 1000' of wire on it.
HOWEVER, and this is key, whether you spool it on, or a store does, when you get to the water, tie on the biggest weight you own (i use 5 ounce keel weights) go deep, let the entire thing out, and reel it all on back again....
that way she is nice and tight on the spool....
also, never ever let the "end" of the wire to slip back into the spool.....you don't want your wire cross threaded with the line guide....that'll cause massive problems....
finally, don't break down your wire rods....or if you do, put a pool noodle or something in the break, so the wire does not kink where the rod is broken down....
once i put the wire on the tekota, i tie a big spro or stringese swivel on, and never break it down...that way my wire doesn't kink, and most importantly, my wire end doesn't get drawn into the spool, past the line guide.....if that happends, you have to let it all out again, and reel it all back again....
my first year fishing wire i almost threw my rod in the water after 3 breaks in a row on the initial hit....but it was because of the way i was treating my wire (mainly letting it kink) .....
keep your wire clean, and it wont break....
btw, i still have my same two wire dipsy reels since 2004. Same reels, same wire....no issues.
the drags on the tekota's are starting to go...but thats after 7 seasons of very heavy use.....
