Hi all,

With hardwater hopefully just around the corner I have a question concerning heat. For a 2-man portable, what size heater would keep things nice and toasty? Would the 3,800 BTU Little Buddy heater be enough?

Thanks.

I think there is alot of factors to consider to get an accurate answer such as outside temperature, wind velocity, is the sun up and out, how do you want to be dressed while fishing , how long will you be there and most important how do you and your partner handle the cooler temperatures.
my 2 cents

Are you expecting to be sitting in a speedo or your survival suit unzipped? Short answer is yes it will keep you warm but warm is a relative term.

I'd like to at least be able to unzip my suit and not have to wear gloves inside in any condition within reason.

I have a large heater that mounts on a 20lbs tank, if it gets to warm i reglate the heat by opening the doors or windows entill it's a comfortable temp.

I use the MrBuddy 4000 to 9000 in my two man Clam Thermal and it is quite warm even on real cold days. You can run it from the small cylinders or adapt it with a hose to run of your BBQ tank. If you go with the 20lb tank make sure you use the fuel filter on your heater to avoid clogging it up. Filter No: F273699 i get mine from Home Hardware. Watch TSC Stores, Home Hardware and Princess Auto for there pricing on these heaters.

I had a couple different coleman heaters, black cat and i forget the name of the other. They didn't keep my hut warm at all. Got a portable buddy and it has been great. Probably better to go a little bigger and turn it off if its too warm than get a smaller one and not be warm. I would go with the portable over the little buddy, but I haven't tried the little before.

LoL Aadil. I am getting old and soft so i like the hut and heat but the main reason is STELTH MODE . It is funny when you flop a walleye on the ice you all of a sudden have five close friends you have never met before. LoL

Aadil I'm was like you! I have fished Quinte for well over thirty years and haven't spent 4 hours of that time in a hut. Always found some excuse not to have one, no sled/atv, too heavy, always a pain moving it with changing ice or it was froze in. Just bundled up with a extra layer and suffered through it and said to hell with a hut too much grief.

HOWEVER, I am now the owner of a fine atv and modern huts are light, easy to pull/setup and can be relocated in a few minutes. So now I am beginning to think like Fred, getting older, get colder faster, always spending bigger bucks to buy warmer clothing ( my old stuff keeps shrinking for some reason ), more modern technology, finders, camera, more tackle/rods, big heavy auger, the atv now takes care of hauling all that, I am no longer wringing wet when I finally get to where I want to be. That's what always killed me, sweating to get to fish always froze you off the ice faster. I still am debating on a hut for the season, guess it will depend on how much time I get on the ice, but it will be insulated if I do get one. So a smaller heater or even a propane lantern may heat it. Even with the hut I'd likely spend more time fishing outside of it than in it. Wind not the cold is the only killer to sitting on a pail. As in the old summer scenario it's not the heat it's the humidity.
