I headed to the Bay for the first fall trip of this year on Saturday. What a peach of a day to have both my dad and father in law on the water.

We fished from 7am to noon and went 12 for 17, the biggest was 11.7lb. Most of the fish were in the 6.5 to 8lb range. We also got 2 very large mutton.

We fished from past Keith's shole to the lighthouse mostly on the southern shore. Hot program was 240 and 220 back with most of the fish on power dives and Thunder sticks, colour of the day was cheap sunglasses.

I did take a few pictures, but I had some promotional gear on so I won't post without your permission Dan.

Gustar........I followed you into Picton and tried to flag you down. Call me this week if you get a chance.

Shawn,
Sounds like you had a great day. By all means lets see the pictures. We did well on the thundersticks ourselves with the hot color - firetiger

Let me know what you are driving so I can pull up and say hello. I was chatting with Tom on the water and he was doing very well.

Here are the only 2 digital pics I took on Saturday......everything else was shot on slides and won't be back from processing for a while.

Dan, as you can see in the pics I drive for Princecraft and Mercury....It's a 179DLX a new model in 2004. Black and Tan with a 90hp and 9.9. Stop by next time ( It's for sale if you know anyone looking, a good deal too!).
Sorry about calling your rig a 619.....I saw that boat last year too and assumed it was the same guys back. I think they were from New York if I remeber.

Woo-hoo!

It's great to hear that the fishing is getting off to a good start, and a little earlier than usual. Or is it just because we have smartened up, and know to start fishing farther out in the bay earlier in the season?

Sorry to be a dumbass, but where precisely were you guys - Shawn, Mike and Dan - nailing your fish relative to the Glenora Ferry? I am not familiar with this area at all, nor its landmarks. Can you give me directions, something like say "three miles east of the ferry on the south side" or whatever?

Also, has anybody been jiggin' 'em up in the Thompson's and Sherman's areas?

I finally acquired a snap weight system this summer, and look forward to trying it. Any tips?

Cheers,

Pete [and Ron]

And sorry to be a party pooper, but that fish really doesn't look to be anywhere near approaching sixteen pounds, nice though it is. Perhaps it is a case of the Walleye Corollary of Murphy's Law which states that your fish always looks bigger than the other guys', even if it's not. Now here's a big-ass fish! Permit me to brag for my dad, and to freely admit my jealousy since my biggest weighed fish is only 13 and change. However it's possible I have let bigger ones go in the heat of the moment. Isn't it amazing how on a great fishing night you can say, "ho hum, another 12-pounder", and chuck it in the water? Ker-SPLAT.

My dad nearly died a few weeks ago after getting stung by some yellow jackets in my sister's backyard. She's a doctette, and ran for the bee sting kit. When the parameds from 911 arrived fifteen minutes later, the old man's BP was 70 over 40. She said he woulda croaked for sure if she hadn't've had the kit with her. Needless to say, he carries his beesting kit 24/7 now. Except today [speaking of dumbasses]

But he's tough, and it just ain't his time yet, eh? This spring, at age 79, he portaged into Algonquin Park over 14 carries totalling five miles each way to nail our biggest-ever speckled trout - a gorgeous 4 1/4 pounder. Maybe Dan can gimme some web space, and I'll post a picture of that one -- a truly superb fish!

Targa2,

We used 2 scales to weigh this fish. One was a Normark 15 lb scale and guess what, the scaled bottomed out flashing 15 lb 14 oz and than OF. The second scale was a Berkley 50 lb scale. The scale actually bounced over 17 serveral times but it settled @ 16.6 lbs. This fish was big.

Cheers,

Mike

A picture doesnt always do a fish justice. I have a case in point. here is a pic from a local bass "T" in sept. Image There is no doubt the fish on the left is big. Most I have showed guess the fish at around 5lbs when in fact this monster is a Big Mac shy of 8LBS!! It weighed in on "T" scales at 7.28lbs but the picture doesnt do it any justice. I have pics of 4lb bass that look bigger.

Mike no doubt that was a big fish and congrats on it!!

North American Fishing Magazine thought the same - they have printed this photo not only once, but twice. This fish came in second in their contest that year, to a much skinnier but slightly longer fish.

We shoulda lied....

Incidentally buddy told me how he calibrated his digital scale with some weights, and I verily believe his fish was safely over 16 lbs. Most significant is that my dad is only about 5'5" tall, whereas Mike is 6'3"!

I knew this would start some ***. Mike , you are obviously a good angler and that is not the nature of my dispute. I am going simply by two things. The picture and the ODDs. The measurement accross the bridge of a pair of glasses is typically 5.25 inches. That would make your fish around 8 to 8.5 inches deep. The older fellow in the other picture , for example. His fish in around 10 inches deep. There is no question that his fish is larger in all dimentions. ( and he is holding his fish closer to his body than you are which would make it appear smaller)

ODDS are this. I have probably caught upwards of 1500 10 plus walleyes in my history on Quinte. I have caught 2 that were 15 and change and have had 3 on that were larger. I can sight guess most walleyes within 4 oz of their actual weight. Anyone that has ever bet me on the weight of a walleye never bets me a second time. Most scales are pure junk, that is why I spent $100 bucks on a Chattilon.
