Does anybody know what would happen to my trolling speed if I downsized my prop by one pitch. I run a torphy plus 4 blade 26 pitch but have a 25pitch trophy plus back up. I was considering running the 25 pitch this weekend. I am hoping it would slow me down just a tad. Anyone???

Dan,

I dont think it will change you trolling speed very much by downsizing from a 26 to a 25 pitch prop. The best way would be to attach a trolling bag or drift sock to the front cleat of the boat. This will create drag in the water therby slowing down the boat speed. Alternatively yo can use a 3 or 5 gallon plastic bucket and drag this to slow down.

Dan...
I am still waiting for a company to create a vairable pitch prop just like the ones used by airplanes. This would allow us to troll or adjust pitch for hole shots with any HP motor.

BTW I dropped my pitch 3 sizes on my 4stroke 75hp and my boat trolls 1mph faster  but jumps on plane quickly :)

cheers...

Well they do have a variable pitch prop...but probably not for your sized engine......I would just drag the ole sock....it works!!!

thanks for the response guys. I suspected as much. I have been dragging the ole bag for a long time. I was hoping I could get rid of it. Will be out on Sunday. Look for the Ranger with a drift sock off the front.
Take Care

Ya...I know they have them...I just wish they had motorized ones that I could control from the console dash. Tap in a trolling pitch etc.. just love that feature in aircraft. Oh well guess I just have to keep using the trolling bag

Dann you should invest in a trolling plate. The best are from Cabella's
they work great and are totally automatic.

Oh, and I hate to tell ya , but you'll be draggin' that old bag of yours
around untill ya die buddy. Learned that in sex-ed years ago.

Does size matter?

Hmmmm.

All things being equal (idle speed, load of weight in the boat, and wave conditions) I thought one needed to drop the pitch AND diameter of a prop to make a noted difference in lowering trolling speed. I realize this adversely affects top speed.

It worked for my boat that had something between the size of an aiplane prop and a paddle wheel on it when I bought it. (40HP Evinrude, 17' Alum V, approx 900 lbs boat+motor)

Dan I would take Jimbo's advice on the trolling plate but if you don't want to spend the money for one watch ebay , I just paid $24US for a large size" Happy Troller "
