Colder temps, front moving in and the right NE to NW wind got me convinced to hit the treestand this afternoon. I was a little bit later than I wanted to be, leaving the truck for the 20 min walk at 2:00pm.
I'm just reaching the top of the last little hill that tops off onto the plateau where the stand is 50 yards in and catch movement right under the stand. I froze, but it was too late and the buck was giving me his flag. He stopped at about 80 yards, looked back over his shoulder for a couple of seconds and then bounded off. :o Couldn't count points but looked like a nice rack, heavy shoulders & hips, a mature buck for sure. 8O Only time you don't want to see one of those under your stand is before you get there!!!

Got up in the tree hoping he might come back, but no dice. Around 4:15 four does came out and went past at 25 yards, feeding on cedar and browsing the ground underneath the pines where there was no snow. They eventually left in the same direction the buck did.

Going to let things settle down for a few days and try it again after boxing day. Had a good day, saw five deer and left with something to think about until I can get back out.

I could hear the ice booming and cracking as the lake and ponds were freezing up. We'll be icefishing soon I hope.

Echo lake area, between Parham & Tamworth, north of Fourth depot lake. About 1.5 inches of hard frozen snow on the ground. Beaver ponds are froze over, but less than two inches of ice, can't walk on them yet. The shallow bays on the lake were freezing over as well.

Adventure, yeah I'm hoping he wasn't spooked to bad. I'm sure he wasn't above me, LOL, as I spent a little time looking up to the skyes, shaking my head and chewing my bottom lip. Oh well, all part of the game. Had a feeling they might be moving early as I saw 3 different flocks of turkeys out feeding in the fields on the drive up to the lease.

We finally got some snow to put me in the mood so I'm getting out deer hunting a bit and saw 5 does today behind the house. One was broadside at 25 yds but I passed the shot hoping for a buck as well. Not sure if I'll do it again though -if I get another chance. If not, hopefully we'll both get to see fawns with those does next year.

Got over to Wolf Island yesterday for our annual year end hunt. The plan was a waterfowl/deer combination hunt, ducks & geese in the late morning/early afternoon and hit the treestands just before dark. Saw lots of birds, and the action was pretty decent, with small flocks or singles buzzing the spread every 20min to half hour. Lots of fun with laughs galore, some great shots made and a few amazing escapes that brought more laughs. we were having such a good time we stayed put in the blind until dark instead of going after the deer.

Bag was 21 birds for four of us, mostly fat fall mallards, a few blacks, couple of widgeon pairs, one goose. One mallard was banded. Saw some flocks of bufflehead and bluebills, but they stayed well out from the spread.

Headed back north Thursday for one last chance at a buck up there. Cold again and the wind should be in my favour. Plan on getting in before 11:00am and sticking it out until dark or success.
