I have been reading allot of ice reports here lately that are not worth posting. So and So said there was 5 inches then 2 posts down So and So said there was 9 inches at the same spot. Man i have seen quick ice Come and Go but i have never seen ice form 3 inches in a half hour. "Keep it real guys" If you have been out on the ice with spud in hand, Floater suit, Rope and a buddy then by all means your report will be accurate and good information if you decide to post it. Never ever ever take someone's word for it especially if it is your ex lol. When i posted the Ice report from my trip to Moria i give it to you straight because i believe in working as a team of great guys that can help each other to be safe and get home to your family's. I pulled a guy out at Big Island shoal 8 years ago that was on his last leg. I was on my way over to check the ice conditions and had all my gear with me when all of a sudden i see a guy waving frantically at me as i was spudding out. The next thing i know he was gone and i started to head in his direction. My brother Bob yells i see him and we herd the odd cry for help. When we got to him he was done and on his last bit of strength. We got him to shore and a warm truck and i asked him why he went out there and he replied i HERD there was 6 inches. I guess he herd wrong and found out the hard way. As we chatted with him my brother and i gave him some of our dry clothes to put on dry, he began to cry and spoke of his wife and children and how he could have never seen them again. All because of hearsay this guy almost drowned and i could tell you who he is but i wont out of respect for him as a fellow angler and now a very good friend of mine as well as a board member. You are all a great bunch of guy's on here and have a real passion to fish, Just don't let it kill you. Stay professional in your reports and we will all be thankful to you and most of all we will be safe. I did not post this to offend anyone or to discredit anyone in any way. I have seen guys drown both hard and soft water, i have also seen guys freeze to death and some of these have haunted me for many many years. Good luck this season guys...... Fred

Very well said Fred, I share the same thoughts as you. I always qualify my opinions by stating "Here's what I think" and if I have hearsay, I make sure I qualify it as such. For example, New year's eve, my brother in law walked off the Northport boat launch 100 feet, drilled a hole and found four inches. I talked to him right after he did it. I wouldn't pass on a report like that if I didn't think it was credible. We need to come together as a community and post information thats reliable. give out details when you say " I heard there's 4 inches at Potters" Did you sit there in your car and ask a guy that just walked off the ice or were you in line at canadian tire and overhear someone say it. one is a little more credible then the other....I would never hold it against someone on this board if they said I was out at potter's, there's 4 inches of black solid ice and there was only 2.5. I understand ice can be different widths in the span of three or four feet so you take the info with a grain of salt. At the same time, provide some detail in your report so each angler can make his own determination and decide what he or she wants to do....

Good thread Fred.

I do not report ice conditions until I feel that it is safe for everyone. 8 Inches or better.
Now in saying that I have been ice fishing the Quinte area for over 30 years and fished on a lot of unsafe ice, but always with a buddy or 2 and a 50' length of rope.

I saw a crazy deal late this afternoon while driving down the south shore of the Bay from CarryingPlace to Belleville. There was this dude on an ice boat west of Weese's side Road doing about 20 mph heading east. That's nuts in that location as far as I am concerned.

Later
Al

Members in this board are always willing to give out opinion and help to other fellow members. Unlike the other board.
Thanks so much!

That's about the only thing i don't carry blackriverfisherman. That and the kitchen sink LoL. I use the T handle on my spud to hook the bottom of the ice then read the measurement i have marked on it like a tape. I also use it to measure my fish.... Fred

Last year was my first year ice fishing and I went through the ice in Deseronto late, late in the ice fishing season. I only made it on the ice 6 times total last year trying to land my first hard water walleye. I have high hopes for this year but needless to say I have learned my lesson about ice conditions.

a few ice scoops have tape measurers built right onto them so you can hook the bottom of the ice with the scoop and measure from there. very convenient and accurate.
