Jeff and i were on solid 5" of black ice left the ice at lunch and returned to find our ice very soft and many sinkholes. We would advise no one attempting to access the ice until we reach sub zero temps again. Our fish able ice was in low current areas and is no longer safe in our opinion.

Well said Joe. I was just about to post something very similar.

We got off the water for lunch today, came back and 4 inches had turned to 3 OR LESS! Lots of water on top of the ice which is making for very soft ice.

Could be OK by Sunday with temps dipping overnight on Saturday, but I wouldn't go anywhere without rope, a spud and a buddy.

Stay safe guys.....let's not hear about any accidents. The walleye aren't going anywhere!

crazy is one thing totally stupid is another and you would be totally stupid to go on that ice until next week we need two sub zero days in a row to even think about getting on the ice and then slack back water areas will be the only place that will have icei would not be suprized if the reach opens up and many of the current areas what was ice will be nothing more than slush that looks like ice....... listen to the ones who know because this might be the most dangerious time when it comes to ice people got a lil taste and want more.. DONT DO IT!

Absolutely correct Grizzly. Dave and I were off Big Island today and we were on a good 4' of black Ice. BUT here is what I found compared to yesterday. There was a fare bit of water on the Ice and when i drop the spud you could see the Ice crack a long way below the spud. What this means people is that the ice density is not as hard as yesterday when it would not crack ahead of the spud because it was much harder Ice. Walking in tonight you were almost leaving a foot print as the surface is soft. With the mild weather this weekend I would also advise you to stay off. When we got to shore I walked the shoreline for a ways and you could see my body weight lower the ice in the pressure cracks and force water out so Be Safe. Stay Home. Clean up your tackle and get ready for next time...

Thanks for posting this. Lots of ice an hour to the north, if your desperate to icefish go for a drive north. Some guys had to get rescued on simcoe yesterday. Be safe and don't fish alone. Just remember if the ice is unsafe and you go out and get in trouble your liable for the rescue bills, also not worth risking a rescuers life.

You are absolutely right grizzlygreig. Allot of guys are under the impression that they are safe to walk on thin Ice so long as they have on there floater suit. Unless you are very physically fit and have a Damn good set of picks you are at the mercy of the situation. Most times when you go through it is your buddy pulling you out with a rope because you cannot get yourself out. It is very hard to get your arms going with all the broken ice that is trying to squeeze you to even use picks and half the picks i see on the market are junk. I saw a set of picks used by the Georgian Bay rescue squad and i came home and machined a set just like them and they pick. Next time your out lay on the Ice and try to pull yourself across the surface using you picks and see how they work. Most times when you go through it is because you are in a high currant area so that can be another thing for you to have to fight against as the suction can be quite strong. Floater suites are another thing I myself like lots of leg floatation to help me get flat and pull myself out. Many suits don't even have leg floatation so that all becomes dead weight in the water as well as them great big boots now full of water. If you do manage to get out you still have to get in and get someplace warm real quick and that can be harder than going through. Strip down to you shorts the next -30 night and go stand outdoors for 10 min and you will get a small taste of what you will feel like coming out of the Ice. I served 4 years 77-80 on a volunteer Fire and Ice Rescue Squad and have been through a few times Training and during Rescue and believe me it is not something you want to happen to you. I know some of you may think this is a little long winded or who is this guy but if i took the time to wright it and you took the time to read it then i guess i succeeded in what it is i am trying to do here and that is help you enjoy your passion to fish and to see you get home each and every time. Keep Safe My Friends.

I went through in the 90s in an Argo near the bayside water treatment plant, tones of people fishing the area and we just hit a bad spot. Being in the Argo we did not get wet but it would not crawl back on the ice( no tracks or ice cleats) we did not dare try to get out, fire and rescue came to get us. It's things like this that make u respect the ice. And after reading these posts u don't your a dumb ass!....... Ice or boat I just want to fish quinte... Would not be the first time I have had the boat in during January 4 or 5 years ago we limited out 3 Times in a row jigging from my green power operated moble floating ice hut
