I went to my first Quinte walleye league meeting last night so i thought id make a little post with my findings and honist oppinion as to how it went.......... first off i must say that this club is like many other clubs ive joined and been envolved with in my years there is a small circle of good members trying there best to get this new club up and running, and like all new clubs they have a tough row to hoe experiancing growing pains with little support from over half if not 3/4ths of there memebers. they all know who they are lol shame shame shame.....
Now that i live here in Canada i figured it was time for me to go sit a meeting and see what it was all about and i must admit i was inpressed with the dedication from the few who are trying, and like any club out there they need more dedicated members to get it really going. and i think they are well on there way.
Many good ideas were discussed, and they are trying to put together a program that will not only bennifit the club but also the quinte community around them, In one short year they have done alot of work setting a foundation and it seems now is the time to start building the structure on the foundation so its a great time jump in and lend a hand.
what i saw is 10 or 11 dedicated guys. feeling a bit swamped, and also a little dishearted because of the massive support in the few first meeting and then like so many clubs members get busy with life, and fade away and this really is a common thing so many will jump in toss out ideas but when its time to put them to effect they become otherwise preoccupied and unwilling to support, or carry out .
As they say Rome wasnt built in a day and neither will any club be built over night but this really does have to potentual of becoming a good thing here guys. and honistly i feel anyone living in the community looking to break into the fishing world should consider joining up it really does have many bennifits to offer to thouse who get involved expessally since its so new its a great time to mold and form into the type club the common everyday fisherman might want, also a great way to meet and become friends with like minded fishermen out to enjoy the sport we all so much love!
I would like to add here at this point I am not a paid member, or a spokes person for this club just a person standing outside looking in and reporting to people here my findings at an open invitation meeting held last night .......... I do believe i will Join and support in the future because i do like what I saw, and it is easy to see there is great potentual, and they really could use a little help so take it for what its worth and consider it for yourselfs.............Grizz

Thanks Grizz, It was great to see some new faces out to our meeting. As I mentioned to Al last night I really appreciate the input you guys provided, and think that overall the meeting has definitely has shed some positive light on different areas of our club. Looking forward to seeing you in the future.

Thank again.

Great report Grizz.

If the club could let us know as soon as possible when the next meeting will be that would be great.

Very well said & thanks for the report Grizzly. We at Ottawa Region Walleye League are just completing our third year have and similar problems, but I have always found this is the case in any organization - its always the dedicated few that seem to do all the required work/organizing and its a good thing they do or nothing would happen. Its always nice to see any organization grow in numbers, but I am convinced that the success of any organization cannot be counted by membership numbers alone. I personally would rather be in involved with a smaller organization with all members as active participants, than a larger organization with only a few active members. When trying to make any organization with a large number of members work, one must always remember a fundamental truth - we all have families & work priorities and these will always & should take precedent over club requirements.

I really feel that the key to success in clubs such as ours is to find the agenda that brings the most satisfaction to the majority of members. We at ORWL have found that most of our members enjoy our regularly scheduled fishing competitions (AT OUR EVENTS THE EMPHASIS IS ON FUN & NOT THE COMPETITION - (bragging rights are more important than big prizes), and participating in any possible conservation related projects. We are planning on scheduling 10 events for 2012, and as usual only one's top 5 score will count towards our annual awards. This allows a member to miss several events due to above mention other priorities without being too severely penalized.

We have always maintained a Club presence with our local OFAH Zone Organization and have also been successful in hosting a free kids ice fishing day during February. We plan on doing it again this year. Our first winter meeting is scheduled for Monday evening, so hopefully we can get things organized for this upcoming event.

I have always envisioned FUN inter-club competitions and still would like to see this happen. I personally fish BOQ area a lot in Spring & Fall, but a lot of our members only have smaller boats and are therefore not comfortable in going to bigger waters, but I can still see something along these lines happening in the future.

Sorry for the long winded rant, but I just wanted to encourage everyone to stick with it as I too think both our Clubs are well worth the effort. I know that I personally have made numerous new fishing friends since becoming a part of ORWL and this with the memories is what life is all about.

Good luck with your continued success, and GOOD FISHING TO EVERYONE IN 2012.

Hey guys I enjoyed the meeting and I could tell the QWL is heading in the correct direction. Organization and growth takes time. I hope to get more involved in the future if all goes well.
Congrats on the good job.
Al
