Not looking for reports, just wondering what happens to the "bad ice" we have now after the temperature starts to drop again?? Does the the bad ice turn good again, or will it be layers of good and bad? Coming up weekend of the 20th (cottage and hut rentals) and with the temperature dropping, I'm hoping for the best. Just want to know what to expect.

Thanks

Walleye 9,

The best ice is created when the bay is calm and you have 3 or 4 days below minus 10 Celcius. You get clear, bubble free ice. 4" of clear ice could just about hold up anything. With the honeycombed or bad ice that we presently have, we will end up with less than ideal ice when it refreezes. If we don't get some -10 deg C or lower nights soon, we could have ice that will remain dangerous for a number of weeks. Especially for ATV's.

Good thing is, the ice always gets better again. Eventually.

Ok, cool. I know clear ice is the best, and not worried about a crust of white on top, just wasn't sure of the stability of re-frozen ice all the way through. So should I consider 8" of crap ice to be equal to 4-5" of good.

Sounds like a good comparison to me.
