in 20-plus years of ice-fishing out there - that's a new one to me too?... Wondering if with the advent of today's cameras if anyone has been seeing them - let alone catching Gar?... pretty cool though....

later ....... G!

February 12, 2011 - somewhere on Quinte!!

I've been ice fishing all my life, and none of us have ever seen or heard of it before.... then it happened..

And then 5 minutes later it happened again...

Until that day, I would never in a million years believe someone if they said anything about a gar through the ice.

Another buddy has already landed one this year, and a guy we talked to last year also caught 2 the same day we did.

They get much bigger in Ottawa though.. Maybe I should go and target these through the ice up here. :-)

I seen one on my camera a couple years ago off pointe anne. It was pretty freaky watching him come in from the dark distance and swim around our minnows! We were in 20+ ft. Would'nt bite though, I think the lure attached to the minnow was not his flavour!

I've dropped the camera into a school of about 10 gars,we tried everything but they had no interest at all. They hung around for about 5 min, didn't spook but slowly moved off. My two boys were with me, they though it was pretty cool lol.

Last year we had two holes drilled in the pop-up and a gar swam about 2' under the ice and was visible in both holes, maybe 36"+ long!

Very cool... I know there's a resurgence of anglers targetting Gar around the province in open water (especially some a few thrill-seeking fly-dudes :)) Have to admit, I never really thought waht gars do through the ice and until now never heard anyone talk about even seeing them on the camera - but obviously, I wasn't hearing from the right people;)... Nice picks guys, I'm jeoulous ..... G!

What kind of set up were you using to catch through the ice? Might be something I'd like to try. They are spooky fish you must have been very very quiet.....shhhh.
